2018-2019 CES Family Bulletin #4

weekly

Dear CES,

This week has been packed with student learning. Our small group instruction in math and language arts is up and running. Students are working collaboratively to use their critical and creative thinking skills to solve problems.

If you have been in our school this year you have probably noticed that many of our classrooms do not have traditional school furniture. This is not due to budgetary issues or the large number of students attending CES. At CES we are introducing (or have introduced) Flexible seating to some of our classrooms. Flexible seating classrooms give students a choice in what kind of learning space works best for them, and help them to work collaboratively, communicate, and engage in critical thinking. Click HERE for more information on Flexible Seating.

*Have you ordered your spirit wear for the 2018-2019 school year? If not, today is the LAST DAY to order. Items start at $12. Place your order online at https://orderschoolstuff.com/centrevillees18/ using the password OurCES. Don't miss your chance to have your child show off their school spirit!

*All parents are invited to join the PTA. Annual dues are $15 per adult. Dues help us plan community events like the Welcome Picnic and Bingo Night, assist with the cost of field trips, and show appreciation for our teachers. PTA membership does not mean you have to come to meetings or volunteer but it helps support OUR school.

*Did you know our school has a share table? When students have uneaten and unopened food items or milk they can offer it to others through the share table. As part of CES' commitment to helping others, any items left at the end of the week is donated to the Katherine Hanley Family Shelter. We are in need of volunteers to pickup the donation from school and deliver it to the shelter. This is a once a week commitment and can be a shared position. If you're interested in helping please contact Mary Ann Settlemyre, mjsettlemyre@fcps.edu.

Student Dress Code

On June 14, the Fairfax County School Board updated the dress code language in the Student Rights & Responsibilities regulation. The School Board voted to remove gendered language in the dress code and require that dress code conversations be held in private to respect the dignity of the students.

FCPS respects students’ right to express themselves in the way they dress. It is important, however, that their appearance is appropriate for a K-12 school setting.

As outlined in the dress code, any clothing that interferes with or disrupts the educational environment is unacceptable.  Clothing with language or images that are vulgar, discriminatory, or obscene; or clothing that promotes illegal or violent conduct, such as gang symbols, the unlawful use of weapons, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or drug paraphernalia; or clothing that contains threats is prohibited.

More information about the dress code is available in the FCPS Guide for Families section which has been updated since the original print version was distributed and can be viewed here:

If you have any questions about the dress code, please feel free to contact us.

This week our students focused on the trait of CURIOSITY. Individuals with a character strength of curiosity like exploration and discovery. They ask lots of questions because they want to learn more about anything and everything.

Next week our students will focus on the character trait of OPENMINDEDNESS. Please continue to have conversations at home on the weekly character traits covered at school.
