From the Principal's Desk

I hope you had a great week.  I would like to highlight just a few bits of news. As part of last night’s FCPS School Board meeting, Chantilly HS was recognized for receiving the 2018 Virginia Board of Education Excellence Award. Among other achievements, the award is for public schools in Virginia that expand opportunities for learning and achievement as evidenced by progress on multiple indicators of school and student performance. I want to extend my continued thanks to everyone at Chantilly for ensuring that our students continue to achieve at a high level. I’m also pleased to report that our new morning tardiness policies and protocols are making a positive difference. During the first two days of our trial period this week, we averaged 98 tardies per day; by the second two days, we dropped the average by almost 50% to 45 per day. Special thanks to our new Dean of Students, Laura Totoro, for leading this initiative. As mentioned in previous messages, we are starting our Recent Student Successes program that highlights students for demonstrating growth in academics, behavior, or citizenship. Please see the segment below to find this week’s nominees from the English Department. Finally, I encourage everyone to sign up for the Asha-Jyothi 5K this Sunday. Please see details below and remember that all proceeds raised by Chantilly HS participants will go to help Needy Illiterate Children Education (NICE).

Senior Portraits

The remaining 156 senior portraits will be taken by Lifetouch the week of September 24 here at school.  Appointment cards were mailed home, and students should check with their sub school or senior English teacher if they have lost their appointment card, or need to be rescheduled sometime that week. ID cards will be issued and the portrait will appear in the 2019 Odyssey yearbook. Lifetouch customer service number is 410-644-7700.

Recent Student Successes

This is the first installment for the school year of what will become a weekly segment aimed at recognizing students for demonstrating recent improvement or achievement in academics, behavior or citizenship. At the end of each recognition, you will see the name of the nominating teacher or staff member. On a rotating basis, departments will nominate students.  I plan to meet with recognized students each week to congratulate them in person.

  • Asrith Biradavolu consistently contributes to our class culture with his positive attitude and his signature Asrith originality which sparks up every activity. He is always focused, generous, kind, and can be counted on to see something in a unique way, thus enhancing our understanding of whatever is being studied.  Ms. Molli Atallah
  • I am proud of Annie Huang for demonstrating poise and confidence in her speech and debate class. She is starting to find her voice and to share her ideas with her classmates.  Ms. Barbara Clougherty
  • So proud of Hayden Lumpkin for jumping right into Creative Writing- for taking risks, for sharing your writing, for your refreshing sense of humor!  Ms. Nikki Lehman
  • John (J.P.) Miner LOVES to read! All our students were asked to write roughly 200 words about their favorite literary character as a writing sample. J.P inquired if 425 words were too much to write about Halt O'Carrick from "Ranger's Apprentice." I just love questions like that and support his love of reading!  Ms. Mary Kay Downes
  • Kylene Zrenda brings a welcome sense of calm to our class. She's engaged and friendly and chooses her words well. I know that when she speaks up, it's something she's thought through and something that we'll all benefit hearing.  Ms. Julianne Abruzzo

In the Community

Community Meeting Scheduled to Introduce the Sully Community Center Project

A community meeting has been set for October 1, 2018, beginning at 7 PM, at the Sully Governmental Center (4900 Stonecroft Boulevard, Chantilly, VA 20151) to discuss the construction of the new Sully Community Center. Fairfax County is proposing to build the new Sully Community Center on a 5-acre site at the intersection of Wall Road and the Air and Space Museum Parkway in Chantilly – near Highlands Park. The roughly 30,000 square-foot facility will serve as a multi-generational facility for the surrounding communities and will be the new and permanent location of the Sully Senior Center (currently operating in leased space in Chantilly). The center will be home to a broad array of services, programs, and activities for individuals of all ages and abilities.  The project is currently in the initial stages of design and is scheduled to be completed in 2022.
