Absences Add Up: Attendance Matters!

As the school year begins, we want you to how FCPS follows up on student attendance. Regular attendance and active academic engagement yield the best student outcomes. In Virginia, public school students, aged five to eighteen, are expected to attend school daily, unless their absence is excused due to illness, a death in the family, a medical or dental appointment, or religious obligations.

We reach out to parents when:

  • Students don’t arrive at school as scheduled. We must hear from parents within 48 hours of an absence, and will try to reach parents to find out the reason why the child did not report.
  • Students are chronically absent (miss 10% of the school year, for any reason).
  • Students have five or more unexcused days, because this is a truancy matter.

Parents assist educators by:

  • Continuing to communicate with schools when your child will be absent.
  • Planning non-school related trips, such as those scheduled to visit relatives, or family vacations, when schools are not in session. Doing so helps children avoid lost learning opportunities.
  • Monitoring your child’s attendance.
  • Seeking resources, including school support, if your child is experiencing difficulty in school.

Food Services Information

Free and Reduced-Price Meals Application Available Online

Free and reduced-price meal applications may be completed online or by submitting a handwritten, paper application for the 2018-19 school year. Electronic meal applications are quick, easy, and available in the following languages: English, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Filipino, French, and Vietnamese.

Both the online application and paper application now include a designated section with the consent to share information for other programs. This update allows parents and guardians to complete the free and reduced-price meal application and the consent to share information in the same document.

Paper applications must be the original red print forms, which are available at school offices, school cafeterias, and other FCPS buildings. Copied application forms cannot be accepted.

More information is available on the Free and Reduced-Price Meals web page.

Oak Hill Library Parent Volunteer Opportunity

If you are interested in helping in your child’s library, we have the following options for you to choose from:

  • Shelving and shelf maintenance:  Come on your own schedule during the school day and help with shelving books and making sure our shelves are in order.  This makes it easier for our kids to access the books they want!
  • Check out books to students:  Help is needed Monday-Friday from 2:15-3:15.   If that time works for you, pick a day and come every week on that day.  You will scan books on student library accounts as they come to the circulation desk with their book choices.
  • Library Inventory: This will take place in early 2019.  Every book will need the barcode scanned.  I anticipate this to be a two-week process, depending on the number of volunteers we have in the pool.
  • Book Fair:  This will take place Oct. 22-26.  Volunteers will be needed during that week and the week before. You may hang signs, help set-up, assist with point of sale, or help pack up the fair at the end.

If you are interested in getting involved in the library, we would love to have your help in these areas.  Training will be provided!

Please contact Jenny Henry or Billy Germain at 703-981-0792 or jlhenry@fcps.edu

Literacy News

We are so excited to be back in school and all of our classes have already been hard at work with building a reading and writing community within their classrooms.  This first unit for all of our grade levels in reading is about setting up routines and procedures to run a successful reading workshop.  Students will learn how to choose books for independent practice, they will be learning how to read around the room, and, most importantly, how to talk about their reading with peers and their teacher.  At home, you can follow up with this by asking your child what they have been reading and ask them specifically about the characters in their books.  Support them in making connections and developing theories about the characters in the books they read.

Early Dismissal Day

On Wednesday, September 19th, students will be released 3 hours early, at 12:30 p.m. There will be four additional 3-hour early dismissal days this school year. These days are planned to provide time for staff development.

Please make transportation and child care plans now for September 19th.

The lunch schedule on the early dismissal days will be modified to allow all students to have lunch.
