Welcome Back TJ Colonials!

Dear TJ Colonials Family:

Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year! We will open our doors, hands and hearts to nearly 1800 students. Our teachers will inspire joyful learning and a love of inquiry, and we will continue our goal to bring balance to our students' lives.

Everything you need can be found on our Opening of School web page. PLEASE NOTE THE SR&R PARENT SIGNATURE SHEET HAS BEEN UPDATED. The date on the form should reflect the 2018-2019 school year. The link to the old form from last year may have been active at the time you accessed it. Please access the updated form here, print, sign and return. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Here are a couple of reminders:

Driving to Campus: If you intend to drive, plan your travel with plenty of extra time to arrive. Traffic backs up on Braddock Rd. starting at 8:15 a.m. and it can take 10 minutes or more to arrive at the school's entrance. Classes start promptly at 8:40 a.m. Starting the day on time helps alleviate stress for our teachers and students, so thank you for planning accordingly.

Arrival on Campus: There is only one entrance off Braddock Rd. When you turn in the main entrance, ALL car traffic must flow to the LEFT. Security staff will be on site to direct you through the Kiss and Ride lane at the rear of the school. Please pull all the way forward in the lane to drop off your child. Follow signs and directives to exit the drop off loop. Bus traffic will flow to the right and drop off students at Door 12.

Dismissal from Campus: Again, enter from Braddock Rd., turn left when you drive onto campus, and follow signs and staff directions to line up, park and drive off campus once you pick up your child. You will have a 10-minute window from 4:00-4:10 p.m. to exit. Then, at approximately 4:10 p.m., the buses depart, so you will need to wait until all buses exit campus before car traffic resumes. Thank you for your patience as we keep our campus safe. Tip for bus riders: download the TJ Bus App! When you exit Door 12, you will be able to easily find where your bus is parked.

Visiting Campus: Outside regular arrival and dismissal times, please park in the visitors lot across from the Dome, our main entrance. This is the only access point during the day. We ask you press the buzzer as you approach the main door and display ID before entering the school and reporting to the main office to register. Thank you for your part in keeping our school secure.

Transportation on Buses: If you believe you have been assigned to an incorrect depot or if you have other concerns about a pick up or drop off location, please contact transportation directly at at 703-446-2050 or mdpereztobar@fcps.edu.

Student Schedules: Students will receive verified final schedules in homeroom. We ask all students report to their assigned classes. Counselors will be working earnestly this week and next week to adjust schedules for students who either 1) need certain courses to complete graduation requirements, 2) need a complete schedule, or 3) need to adjust a course because there was a mistake and/or sequencing is incorrect. Counselors will initiate contact with students fitting these circumstances. Students should not contact counselors about a schedule change merely because they changed their mind since last spring, they prefer a different teacher, they want to be with certain peers, etc. Only in the most extenuating circumstances will a schedule change be accommodated, and it will need the recommendation of a counselor and approval by an administrator.

Family Life Education

Family Life Education Instructional Program Information

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve.  Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program.  Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices.  Opt out forms were included in your child’s back-to-school mailing and are available online here. Please fill in the opt-out form and return it to your child’s school prior to Family Life Education instruction.

Program questions may be addressed at your child’s school or by contacting Instructional Services at 571-423-4550 or by contacting Elizabeth Payne, Health and Physical Education Coordinator at etpayne@fcps.edu.

Health Bulletins
