MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year.  We are incredibly excited to start the school year, and as a staff we look forward to renewing old relationships, learning about our newest Bulldogs – the Class of 2022 and other new students to our school and community.  We are also counting the days to graduation with the Class of 2019 and looking forward to their successes throughout the year.

On Tuesday, August 21, we have our 19th Annual Bulldog BBQ.  Mr. Sims and Mrs. Hoyseth have led this undertaking in conjunction with the PTSA and other clubs and organizations.  The SGA and other student groups will be on hand to introduce themselves, provide information and demonstrations.

We anticipate our enrollment will be over 2700 students this school year.  The Class of 2022 will have approximately 700 members which increased our staffing.  We are excited to welcome more than 30 new staff members to our school.

Our theme for the year is ENGAGEMENT.  As educators, we will engage with each other to continue to improve our practices to improve all students’ learning and success.  We will engage with our students to get to know them as individuals and learners.  We will engage with parents and guardians to work together to promote student learning and success.

An area of emphasis this school year will be ATTENDANCE.  We have a full-time Dean of Students who will address all attendance issues (i.e. absence from school, absence from class, tardy to school, and tardy to class).  Consistent school and class attendance are the most effective ways to ensure academic success.  Being on time for school and class allows students to experience the complete lesson the teacher has prepared.  We appreciate your support in emphasizing the importance of getting to school and classes on time with your student.

This school year, we are offering the Westfield App.  It is free on Google Play or the App Store.  This tool will afford our students many of the same functions they had with the paper agenda (i.e. calendar, place to record homework, schedule, etc.).  It will also give us another means with which to communicate with students, staff, and parents.  We will share more information about the Westfield App in the coming days.

We have a new bell schedule.  The new schedule allows us to better align with our academy schools, so our travel students can benefit from their programs.  School still starts and ends 8:10 am and 2:55 pm, respectively.

In closing, I would like to thank you for your support as we continue to make Westfield High School a wonderful place to learn and grow for our students and our staff.  I look forward to seeing you on campus at our events.

GO BULLDOGS!
