UPDATE: Redesigned Unified Pay Scales to Be Presented to School Board April 19

As mentioned in a previous issue of Employee News, the Department of Human Resources has developed proposed redesigned pay scales for the remaining unified scale positions as part of FCPS’ ongoing efforts to provide market competitive employee compensation. (Remember, redesigned pay scales were put in place for teachers, classroom instructional support positions, and hourly contracted positions in Food Services and Transportation at the start of FY 2018.)

Remaining unified scale changes comprise three additional salary schedules and provide for better market alignment. Access the proposed scales on BoardDocs. If approved, no employee’s salary would be decreased as a result of the redesigned scales.

Human Resources will present the proposed unified scales to the School Board on Thursday, April 19. If the Board endorses the recommendations, redesigned unified scales will be implemented as part of the FY19 Advertised Budget. See what employee groups would be impacted and review additional details.

IRS Urges Employees to Perform "Paycheck Checkup"

The IRS is urging employees to perform a “paycheck checkup” because of the recent tax law changes. The earlier employees perform the checkup, the more time there is for withholding to take place evenly during the rest of the year. The IRS emphasizes the new tax law changes make it especially important for specific groups of taxpayers to visit the calculator. This includes people in households with two or more jobs, who have children or dependents, who itemize their taxes, or who have high incomes or complex tax situations. Get details on the IRS website

When all hands are on deck, our employees are always ready to help out. In this case, it's Freedom Hill ES Art Teacher Art Waldrip (yes, his name is "Art"), who helped some curious kindergartners with math. Sounds like a good time for some Art appreciation. (Photo: Freedom Hill ES)

    Join the ERFC Ambassador Program

Help spread the value of the Educational Employees' Supplementary Retirement System of Fairfax County (ERFC) throughout the FCPS community! Ambassadors are workplace retirement plan resources for their peers and represent ERFC in schools and centers located throughout the division. Becoming an ambassador is easy. Simply attend one training session, become familiar with very basic plan information, receive your ambassador resource box, and return to your workplace as an ERFC representative!

Every ERFC member should be well-informed about the value of their retirement benefit. Help ERFC reach its goal of having an ambassador in every FCPS work location. Please send your name and work location to Lisa Scott,  lbscott1@fcps.edu, to join an upcoming training session.

    #OurFCPS Faces: Cara Kirby

Cara Kirby, Career and Technical Education Office

Cara Kirby started teaching marketing at Springfield Classroom-on-the-Mall back in 1998, then taught at Lee HS before moving to the Career and Technical Education office. In her current role as senior career experience specialist, Cara works to coordinate experiences for students that get them out of the classroom and into the work environment. Those experiences include internships, job shadowing, corporate tours, site visits, and other opportunities. Cara also serves as the dual enrollment liaison for all FCPS dual enrollment courses. Jay Garant, administrator for Business and Community Partnerships, frequently works with Cara. He notes, “When asked to select a word to describe working with Cara Kirby, I couldn’t [...]. Two words are needed: supportive and collaborative."

What Cara enjoys most about her job is exposing students to opportunities and careers. “I love helping students make the connection between their education and how it can be applied in a career setting,” she says. Beth Downey, Cara’s supervisor, adds, “Cara’s passion for students having access to career experiences is infectious.”

In her spare time, Cara enjoys gardening, hiking, and doing anything with animals, especially spending time with her dogs (and sometimes an iguana!). Cara, we’re so glad you're sharing your passion with FCPS!
