RCMS PTA Announcements - Week of April 9

RCMS 20th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION!

We are looking forward excitedly to commemorating the 20th anniversary of the opening of Rachel Carson Middle School.  We hope your whole family will join us on Friday, April 20, from 4:30-7:00PM.

Along with the school staff, we have planned a fun and family-friendly evening to include:  five food trucks from which to purchase food, snow cones, face painting, photo booth (bring your own camera), live DJ entertainment, the Carson Wonder Race (sign up here to participate in the Race), (cup)cake walk, and games for the little ones.  You could even win a door prize (including a GoPro or a bluetooth speaker)!  So bring a lawn chair or blanket, and enjoy dinner on the lawn with your family while you catch up with some Carson alumni.

Adult volunteers are needed to help at the event -- please consider volunteering for a short shift that evening here.  Your help is appreciated!!

APRIL PTA MEETING

Important PTA Meeting April 26 6:30pm in the Library - Next year’s slate of PTA officers will be announced and we will vote on our PTA Bylaws.

Following the meeting, Rachel Carson parent Swati Shirali and Jodi O'Hern will speak on Protecting Our Children from Sex Trafficking in Fairfax County.

Did you know that there have been many victims of sex trafficking in Fairfax County high schools and middle schools?  Just Ask, an organization to help stop human trafficking, will be giving an informative talk on teen human trafficking.  It is focused on parent and teen education about trafficking- how our children are scouted, manipulated and trapped.  They will discuss who may become a victim and the different types of traffickers as well as what we, as parent can do and our children.

According to the FBI, human trafficking is the second fastest growing crime sector in the United States. There is a potential to effect ALL middle school and high school students, as traffickers are going after all children regardless of ethnicity and social economic group and gender online and in public spaces.
