Special Education Update

March 2018

Especially for Parents

  • Mind in the Making: The Seven Essential Life Skills Every Child Needs  Mind in the Making identifies seven skills from child development research and neuroscience that help children thrive both now and in the future. The good news is that parents and educators can promote these skills in children by doing simple, everyday activities and it’s never too late to begin! This seven week series of workshops will begin with the first skill, Focus and Self Control on March 1, 2018, from 10 a.m. to noon. We will continue with Perspective Taking on March 8, 2018, Communicating on March 15, 2018, and Making Connections on March 22, 2018. Each workshop will take place from 10 a.m. to noon. The remaining three workshops will take place on April 5, 12, and 19, 2018. Each workshop will be held at the Dunn Loring Center for Parent Services, Entrance 1, Room 100.
  • FREE Technology Tools to Support Students with Dyslexia and Reading Difficulties  Join us to explore strategies and resources to support students with reading difficulties in the digital classroom and at home. Topics will include Google Apps for Education, Electronic Screen Readers, Online Book Repositories, and iPad Accessibility Features. Highlights will be useful in supporting students of all ages who struggle with reading. This workshop will be held on March 2, 2018, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Dunn Loring Center for Parent Services, Entrance 1, Room 100.
  • Trauma 101:  Empowering Parents and Educators   Research suggests that approximately 1 in 4 children will experience a traumatic event by the age of 16. We know that traumatic stress in children and youth contributes to poor school performance and makes it harder to develop strong, healthy relationships with peers and adults. Families and educators, as frontline partners for children, benefit from strong foundational knowledge regarding the signs of trauma, how trauma reactions may influence behavioral, emotional, and academic outcomes, and home and school strategies to help support children. Come and learn how parents, caregivers, and friends can help build resilience in children impacted by traumatic stress. This workshop will take place on March 7, 2018, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Dunn Loring Center for Parent Services, Entrance 1, Room 100.
