National School Counseling Week
"School Counselors: Helping Students Reach for the
Stars," will be celebrated next week, February 4th through 9th to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors
within U.S. school systems.
National School Counseling Week, sponsored by the
American School Counselor Association, highlights the tremendous impact school
counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a
career.

Get Service
On Thursday, February 1st, the Woodson PTSO sponsored
the “Get Service” video for all students.
The “Get Service” video highlights
one of our school’s core values showing empathy toward others and reminded
students to view their world through a different lens.
Following the video,
students were given a pair of sunglasses to serve as a reminder to help our
students to remember to think about others.
 Students display their Science Fair projects in Cavalier Hall on Tuesday, January 30th. Thank you, Ms. Gaynor for all your hard work coordinating this opportunity for students, volunteers, and staff.
College 101
Come learn what it means when they say, "College is a match to be made, not a prize to be won," on Wednesday, February 7th (snow date, Tuesday, February 13th) at 7pm in the Auditorium.
College 101 is an opportunity to learn more about the college admissions process and meet the staff at Woodson who will guide your child along this process.
Current sophomore families are encouraged to attend even though this process may seem far away.

Service Academy and ROTC Night
Save the date for the annual Service Academy and ROTC Night on Tuesday, February 27th at 7p.m., in Fairfax High School Auditorium (snow date Tuesday,
March 6th).
Are you or your child interested in becoming an officer in the U.S. Armed
Forces? This is a perfect starting point for you. Representatives
from each service academy, branch ROTC program, and Congressman Connolly’s
office will present basic information and be available for important face
time and individual questions.
Although all grades are welcome, this
event is especially important for Juniors.
The application process for
these programs begins the spring of the Junior year.
NOTE: This event is
only held once a year, and hosting rotates between the co-hosts: Fairfax,
Madison, Oakton, and W.T. Woodson High Schools.
Congratulations, Lynn Hill! Lynn was named the Outstanding Hourly Employee for Region 5. Ms. Hill was surprised on Thursday, February 1st with this special award.

P.S. I Love You Day
P.S. I LOVE YOU Day is February 9. Shirts go on sale between
the cafeterias February 5 and are $15 each.
The Winter Dance is February 10. The theme is Vegas
Night/Sadie Hawkins, however everyone is encouraged to attend, with or without
a date. Tickets for the dance are on sale during lunches and are $10 each.
Leadership Class for 2018-2019
Students interested in taking Leadership next
school year must complete an application, get teacher recommendations, and sit for an
interview.
Application forms are now available outside of the Leadership
rooms (A133/A128) and in Student Services.
Completed applications must be
turned in to Mr. Schaefer or Mrs. Schmauder no later than Friday, February 9th.

WIDA Testing Next Week
Current
federal legislation requires that all limited English proficient (LEP) students
participate annually in an English language proficiency assessment. In
the state of Virginia, all divisions use the WIDA Assessing Comprehension
and Communication in English State to State for English Language Learners® 2.0
(ACCESS for ELLs® 2.0) to monitor
students' progress in acquiring academic English. ACCESS for ELLs®
2.0 is administered annually to all English learners (ELs) with an English
language proficiency (ELP) levels of 1-5 in grades Kindergarten through
12.
ACCESS for ELLs® 2.0 is
aligned with the WIDA English language development standards and assesses the
four language domains of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The assessment will:
- Determine students’ English language proficiency level and eligibility for English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) services and testing accommodations.
- Help students and families understand students’ current level of ELP along the developmental continuum.
- Provide teachers with information they can use to plan for and support student learning.
- Assist in determining whether ELs have attained the language proficiency needed to participate meaningfully in content area classrooms without ESOL support.
Students participate annually in the ACCESS for ELLs® 2.0, even if ESOL services are declined, until they reach the criteria for ELP level 6 and are designated English proficient.
This year, the ACCESS for ELLs® 2.0 will be given in our school from February 5th to February 9th.
Advanced Placement Accommodations
All requests for College Board AP testing accommodations must be submitted by Friday, February 20, 2018. Please contact Ms. Bensalem at NBensalem@fcps.edu, for more information.
Interior Video Monitoring Proposal
W. T. Woodson High School is considering installing video monitoring (cameras) in some common hallways of our school. We invite the feedback of our community on the specifics of this proposed installation and will be holding an information and feedback meeting on Tuesday, February 13th at 7:00p.m. at the PTSO meeting in the Woodson Library.

Student Recognitions
Congratulations
to Senior Owen Collins for his achievement in the SkillsUSA competition in
Electrical Construction.
The competition consist of a one-hour written exam and
a three-hour practical exam where students must exhibit their knowledge and
skill concerning electrical construction. On Saturday, January 20th, Owen
finished first in Fairfax County, earning a place in the District competition
on Monday, January 29th where he finished second.
Owen and four other
District qualifiers now move on to the State competition in Virginia Beach in
April. Good luck in the States, Owen!
Congratulations to Amy Do and Matt Hansen for winning the Geometry Factoring Challenge on Wednesday, January 31st. The Algebra 2 Factoring Challenge is next Wednesday, February 7th at 3p.m. in the cafeteria.
 Loyal Heart
Loyal Heart is a student-written and produced Musical which opens Friday, February 16th at 7pm and runs through Saturday, February 17th at 1pm in the Woodson Auditorium. The performances are free and open to the public. Tickets are available at https://loyalheartthemusical.eventbrite.com.
Senior Paul Hardin makes history jump out of the history books and onto the stage with an all new musical Loyal Heart about young King Henry VIII. To tell this tale, Paul composed 24 original songs, fully orchestrated for a 16 piece pit orchestra. Change surrounds young King Henry VIII as he grapples with a destiny he did not expect. The musical asks the question: Who is the Loyal Heart?
Fifty busy students have joined Paul to volunteer their time to make Loyal Heart come to life. As a completely student-led production with the support of Woodson’s Tri-M musical honor society, Loyal Heart gives participating students a chance to have leadership roles in music direction, set design and choreography. Loyal Heart offers the complete cast and crew the unique opportunity to create a new musical while in high school.
The Blank Theater in Los Angeles selected Loyal Heart as a semi-finalist in their Young Playwrights Festival 2017.

The Youth and Parent
Summit is a two-day event for Virginia youth with disabilities ages 13-21 and parents(s). This year's summit will be held on June 13th-15th at JMU in Harrisonburg, VA. The summit is sponsored by the
Virginia Department of Education and the Partnership for People with
Disabilities. Youth with disabilities from across the Commonwealth meet to
network and discuss issues of importance to youth and young adults with
disabilities.
During the Summit, participants work in groups
facilitated by I’m Determined Youth Leaders to discover how the core components
of self-determination can be applied to their lives. Summit attendees are
expected to return to their home schools and communities to share the
self-determination message.
The selected individuals and a parent/guardian
will receive paid registration, dormitory accommodations, travel expenses and
meals for the three-day event. A concurrent Parent Summit for the selected
participant’s parent/guardian will be held at the university. Parent attendance
is based on their child applying and being accepted to the summit. Parents do
not complete an application.
The application due
date is 5:00p.m. on Friday, March 9th. The reference due
date is 5:00p.m. on Monday, March 12th. Applications will be reviewed and acceptance
letters will be emailed by March 31st.
Students are encouraged to apply as early as

Start Planning Now: 2018 FCPS Summer Learning
Program Information
Many students take the summer to advance their academic program,
to sharpen their skills, to learn something new, or to participate in fun camps
and institutes. FCPS 2018
summer learning opportunities include a Credit Recovery Academy
that offers credit recovery courses, intervention, and test remediation
classes; a credit accrual program and summer institutes at Thomas Jefferson
High School for Science and Technology; online courses and classes, including
Self-Directed Economics and Personal Finance; as well as elementary and
secondary intervention and enrichment camps and institutes.
