Liberty Loves Literacy!

During the month of February, all Liberty students are encouraged to create a piece of writing, poem or prose, fiction or non-fiction, and submit the piece to their English teachers. The writing must be original to the student and students will be signing a statement to reflect their own authorship of the piece. Each piece must have a title and author. Writing and content must be school appropriate. Each year, Liberty Middle School publishes a fabulous Literary and Arts Magazine that includes student writing, poems and short stories, and photographs of students’ art pieces. Thank you for encouraging your student to participate in this exciting opportunity.

February’s Character Trait: Kindness & Courtesy

Respect, as demonstrated through respect for self and respect for others, is the character trait that we are teaching our students throughout the school year at Liberty Middle School. Each month an additional character trait or pair of character traits is spotlighted on the morning news, through activities in the building, on posters in the classrooms and hallways, and during character building lessons taught in Lion Time classes. The character trait for February is Kindness and Courtesy. Kindness and Courtesy is having polite, well-mannered behavior towards others; being friendly, helpful, well-meaning, generous, and considerate.  One of the opportunities that students will have this month to demonstrate Kindness and Courtesy is by writing a “snap” about Kindness and Courtesy on their team banner on display in the hallway.

SR&R Updates:

All students will be participating in a third quarter Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) Update during Lion Time on Thursday, February 1. SR&R forms the basic structure in every Fairfax County Public School to promote a safe and positive learning environment.  We are happy that we have successful, talented, and respectful students at Liberty Middle School.

From the PTA:

The PTA meeting will be held tomorrow, February 1st at 6:30 pm in the Library.  We will be discussing several big upcoming events:  Valentine's Candygrams, Liberty v. Stone Volleyball (April 6th), the Spring Vendor Fair (tentatively May 12th), and the 8th Grade Celebration/Dance (June 1st).  We have two volunteers to assist with the 8th Grade Celebration/Dance already, but we need someone to chair the event.  Any volunteers?

Another item we will discuss is the need to establish a Nominations Committee to seek people who are willing to serve on the PTA Board next year due to pending vacancies.  Some current PTA Board Members are volunteering to stay on (both Vice Presidents), but the PTA will definitely need to fill the President, Secretary, and Volunteer Coordinator positions.  One caveat:  if you serve on the Nominations Committee, you cannot serve as a Board Member.
