Update on the power outage
Thank you for everyone's patience today as we worked through a partial power outage in the building. Power was restored at 1:35p.m.
Teachers and students continued learning despite the unplanned outage.
Calendar Reminder: Schools to Close Two Hours
Early on January 25; January 26 and 29 Are Student Holidays
All FCPS schools will close two hours early on January 25,
the last day of the second quarter. Also, schools will be closed for students
on January 26 for a teacher work day and on January 29 for a
staff development day. Classes will resume on Tuesday, January 30. See the 2017-18
school year calendar.
AP Exam Opt-Out Forms and Fee Reminder
As part of the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) FY 2018
Approved Budget, FCPS has adopted new fees for high school students including
Advanced Placement (AP) test fees. The fees for the first six
AP/International Baccalaureate (IB) tests taken by each student for courses in
which they are also enrolled for high school credit will be paid by FCPS.
Students who choose to take one or more AP/IB tests beyond the six FCPS-funded
tests will be charged a fee of $93 per AP test (and $119 per IB test).
Please note: Woodson does not offer IB tests, but IB tests taken at previous
FCPS schools will be counted toward students’ cumulative number of AP/IB tests.
While FCPS encourages all students to take AP tests for courses in
which they are enrolled, students will have the opportunity to opt out of the
test(s) by completing an opt-out form. To assist in the decision-making
process, students will be provided a report with cumulative AP/IB test history
for courses in which they were also enrolled in FCPS and current AP/IB course
enrollment for courses with an associated test. Woodson’s office of Student
Services mailed this opt out form home via U.S. mail on January 12,
2018. Opt out forms are due back to Student Services (E-103) no later than
Friday, February 2, 2018.
Students who qualify for the free and reduced-price meals program and
have submitted the consent to share their free and reduced-price status
will not be charged for these fees in accordance with their waiver selections
on the fee consent form. These forms can be found on the Food and Nutrition
Services, Free and
Reduced-Price Meals web page. The payment of student fees is the
responsibility of parents and guardians. However, for students and
families who are undergoing economic hardships and are financially unable to
pay the stated student fees, assistance is available as noted in the current
version of Regulation 2135, Assistance to
Students. Please contact your child’s school counselor to determine
your eligibility.

Gymnastics Senior Night
 Congratulations, Seniors! Senior Night at the Gymnastics meet with Coach Ellen Hagen-Bowerman at Lake Braddock SS on Wednesday, January 17th.
Congratulations Regional Scholastic Art Award Winners!
A total of 429 middle and high school students enrolled in FCPS won 648 awards in the 2018 Regional Scholastic Art Awards program sponsored by the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers.
Students are awarded Gold and Silver Keys, and Honorable Mentions for outstanding drawings, paintings, prints, photographs, ceramics, sculptures, digital art, design, architecture, jewelry, fashion, film and animation, mixed media artworks, and portfolios.
Gold Key award-winning entries will be submitted to the national Scholastic Art Awards competition, where students are awarded national Gold and Silver medals, as well as monetary awards and scholarships. National awards will be announced in April, and an exhibit of the national winners’ works will be on display in New York later this year.
Winning artwork will be on display at NOVA Community College’s Ernst Community Cultural Center in Annandale beginning Friday, February 9th until Thursday, March 15th, with an award ceremony scheduled for Wednesday, February 21st.
The Scholastic Art Awards program is the largest, longest-running recognition program of its kind in the United States.

FCPS Parent Resource Center
The FCPS Parent Resource Center (PRC) offers a welcoming and engaging environment for parents, educators and community members to access information and resources to support the success of all students, including those with learning challenges, special needs and disabilities. Free workshops, confidential consultations and over 5,000 lending library materials available at the PRC help ensure that ALL students are inspired, engaged and thriving.

Important information regarding vaping
In recent months, we have noticed a significant increase in the number of students reporting the use of vaping devices/e-cigarettes in our community. Vaping is the act of inhaling vapor produced by a vaporizer or
electronic cigarette. The vapor is produced from a material such as an
e-liquid, concentrate, or dry herb.
We have had reports that some students and parents
seem to perceive vaping as a relatively innocuous activity that is less harmful
than other tobacco products. The reality is that there is a growing body of
evidence that vaping can harm people, especially adolescents. For example, the
Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and many other health organizations are warning
people about the dangers of vaping. The CDC states in a recent report entitled,
E-Cigarettes and Young People: A Public Health Concern, “There is
already enough evidence to justify efforts to prevent e-cigarette use by young

It’s important to note that: 1) the
materials used in vaping devices are only recently coming under regulatory
scrutiny and 2) vaping devices can be used to deliver a wide array of other
drugs, including marijuana.
We encourage all of our parents to discuss the
potential dangers of vaping with their child. In addition, please
remind them that both FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities and the FCPS
Participation Policy specifically ban the use of smoking devices and electronic
cigarettes. By providing everyone with a better
understanding of what vaping can do to one’s health and the disciplinary
consequences of using vaping devices will lead to better choices and healthier
young people.

Start Planning Now: 2018 FCPS Summer Learning
Program Information
Many students take the summer to advance their academic program,
to sharpen their skills, to learn something new, or to participate in fun camps
and institutes. FCPS 2018
summer learning opportunities include a Credit Recovery Academy
that offers credit recovery courses, intervention, and test remediation
classes; a credit accrual program and summer institutes at Thomas Jefferson
High School for Science and Technology; online courses and classes, including
Self-Directed Economics and Personal Finance; as well as elementary and
secondary intervention and enrichment camps and institutes.
