1. Bus Information:  Winter weather inevitably brings inclement weather and possible transportation delays.  If you or your student is waiting for a bus, you can click on the following link to determine whether that bus is late and, if so, the projected arrival time.  https://busdelay.fcps.edu/

2. SCA Skate Night:  The SCA is having their annual skate night at SkateQuest in Reston on Friday January 12 from 7:30-9:30PM. Tickets are $10 cash and there will be a DJ playing today’s biggest hits. Bring your friends, family, and neighbors for a night out on the ice. See you there, Panthers!

3. After School Activities:

Registration is opening soon for the Heart & Sole program at Rachel Carson!  By using a curriculum that creatively integrates running with life lessons, Girls on the Run programs like Heart & Sole support girls in developing the confidence and character they need to become strong and healthy young adults. Registration is open January 29-February 26 for the spring season, and the Spring 2018 program will run from March 5-May 20, with program-wide 5k races tentatively scheduled for May 19 and 20. RCMS practices will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:20-4:30PM. The standard fee is $175, but there are military and sibling discounts, financial aid for qualifying families, and payment plans. For more information, go to the Girls on the Run of NOVA website (www.gotrnova.org) or contact the school’s head coach, Julie Lasure at julielasure@aol.com.

Registration will be available for Mindframe Education programs beginning on Tuesday, January 16.  Registration is completed once the fee has been paid on https://www.myschoolbucks.com.  All classes are from 2:30-3:30PM and the registration fee is $195.00 for each individual session.  There are 14 spots available for each session and they will be filled on a first come basis. The following programs will be offered: Monday - Digital Arts - Intro to Graphic Design with Photoshop;  Wednesday - Mobile Game Design using FlowLab; and Thursday - Java Programming.  Classes will begin the week of January 22.

3. PTA Parent Workshop: On January 18, 2018, at 6:30PM, the PTA will host The College Funding Coach at RCMS.  This educational workshop will offer parents strategies for planning for the many expenses related to college tuition.  You won't want to miss this!  To RSVP and register for this informative evening, click here.

4.  2018-19 Course Scheduling: Believe it or not, as winter settles in, it is time to begin thinking about classes for next year!  On January 22, high school counselors will visit Carson 8th grade students. Students will attend the session at Carson for the base school assigned in SIS.  They may not attend another session.  Therefore, if you are interested in finding out more information about another school, please attend the orientation at the school. Rising 9th grade families are highly encouraged to attend the high school curriculum night at the school their child will attend (listed below).  If interested, the online application system to transfer to another school will be sent out by the county later in January.

Carson counselors will be meeting with 7th and 8th grade students in science classes to share information on course selection beginning in late January.  It is important to review selections with your child and reach out to your child's counselor should you have any questions.

5.  Virginia SOL - Grade 8 Writing Dates: 8th Grade students will be taking the VA SOL for Grade 8 Writing Test on March 6 and 7 (snow dates March 8 and 9).  It is important your child attend school on these days.  If possible, please avoid scheduling trips or appointments that would take your child out of school during this time period.
