Holiday Technology and Digital Citizenship

If you purchased a device for your child this holiday season, FCPS wants to help you support your child in the online world.  If the device is internet-enabled, please consider the following tips and resources:

Educate yourself and your childrenDigital citizenship is learning process and your child will need sustained support from parents and teachers. Visit bit.ly/fairfaxdigcit for a fun and interactive parent-child course that can help your family start conversations about navigating the online world.

Establish rules and expectationsHave you thought about the rules you want to establish with your child for setting up accounts and the privacy settings you expect your child to use?  What are your expectations and how will you monitor your child’s online activities?  Not sure where to start? Try these tip sheets, media agreements, and device contracts.

Help your child monitor and manage their screen timeIt’s easy to spend hours on a device, especially when it's new.  Use these guidelines and strategies to help your children learn to monitor and manage their screen time.

Discuss privacy settings and accountsTeach your child to protect their personal information and model the use of privacy settings.  Discuss why these settings are important and teach them how to make privacy setting choices for every app and service they use.  This resource can help you get started.

Give your child action steps:  Discuss potential situations that may arise before they happen and give your child action steps. Do they know what to they can do if cyber bullied, harassed, or if someone sends them something they don’t want to see? Every difficult situation is an opportunity to help prepare them for life beyond your home. These short parent advice videos, which can be filtered by topic and age, can help you identify action steps you can share with your child.

Teach your child to assess risks and make good choicesOnline communication is public and permanent. Talk with your children regularly and remind them that what they do online can impact future opportunities. Their online reputation can also affect their relationships in the face to face world.

Curriculum Night

The Rising 7th and Rising 8th Grade Curriculum Night will be held at Liberty on Thursday, January 11th at 6:30pm. This is a great opportunity to learn about the 7th and 8th grade curriculum and elective options for your student as they begin to select classes for the 2018-2019 school year. We will also have information sessions starting at 6:00pm for parents of ESOL students and parents of special education students.  Hope to see you on January 11th!

January Executive Function Skills

January Executive Function skills are Emotional Control and Response Inhibition.  Emotional control is defined as the ability to manage emotions. Students will be encouraged to be thinking about their emotional state and if that emotional state is conducive for learning.  Response Inhibition is defined as the ability to think before you act. Acting inappropriately, have difficulty taking turns, and talking too loudly are several examples of students that lack response inhibition in the classroom. The desired outcome is to have students develop an understanding of when inhibiting an immediate response is beneficial. Please speak with your student about the benefits of emotional control and response inhibition.

Yearbooks:

The Liberty Middle School yearbook staff would like you to have the information you need to purchase a yearbook for your student before the January 1st price increase.  Until December 31, yearbooks can be ordered for $34. Deadline: AAP Level IV Referrals - January 12, 2018

Parents or guardians of 7th grade students may initiate the full-time AAP Level IV screening process by completing and submitting an Advanced Academic Programs Level IV Referral Form to the Liberty Student Services Department no later than January 12, 2018.  No late referrals will be accepted. AAP Level IV services are available to students in grades 3-8.  Students may be found eligible for full-time placement in AAP Level IV Center classes through a central selection process and receive a highly challenging instructional program in the four core subject areas.  Multiple criteria are reviewed by a central selection committee to determine eligibility for all FCPS advanced academic services. More information about AAP services available at the middle school level may be found on the FCPS public website at:  https://www.fcps.edu/academics/middle-school-academics-7-8/advanced-academics.  If you have any questions, you can contact the Student Services Department at 703-988-8200.

From the PTA:

Parents,
First, thank you to everyone that surged to support the Holiday CandyGram event and the Faculty Luncheon.  Due to several folks stepping forward, both events were major successes.

Next event is the annual Liberty v. Stone Basketball night which will be on Friday, January 19th, starting at 6:30.  It will be held in the Liberty Gym and is open to all students, family and friends.  The PTA is involved in 2 ways:  ticket sales at the door ($5 + a canned donation) and some simple concession sales (pizza, candy, and water).  We'll need volunteers again to man these requirements, so be on the lookout next week for a Signup Genius.
