WTW PTSO WeMail for the week beginning Mon, Dec 11, 2017, Issue No. 16

Milk and Cookies is THIS Thursday, Dec 14, and WE NEED YOUR HELP!

We still need over 100 dozen cookies!

On Thursday, December 14, we will be celebrating our Woodson students with milk and cookies. For those of you new to the school, this is a great tradition. It is a unique way for parents and community members to recognize our students and to show them positive community support. At this event, Parent volunteers make hundreds of dozens of cookies and the PTSO donates milk boxes. After school on December 14, parent volunteers shower the kids with warmth and pass out baggies of cookies and milk to each student at Woodson! In order for this to be successful, we NEED MORE VOLUNTEERS TO DONATE COOKIES! Please visit the sign up genius at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F084AA8A629A20-holiday to sign up to donate cookies and/or to help distribute on December 14. It's a great way to see smiling students and spread holiday cheer:) Any questions, please email Shannon Murphy at shannon.murphy29@gmail.com.

Help Us Thank Woodson Teachers, Administration, and Support Staff

The PTSO invites all Woodson families to celebrate, recognize our wonderful teachers and staff this holiday season. High School isn’t the same as elementary school where we had organized gift-giving and room parents. Please take time throughout the school year, and especially now in the holiday season, to recognize and thank the educators and support professionals that work with our children. Simple notes of appreciation, emails of gratitude and letters in support of teachers, counselors, principal, and or support staff have enormous, meaningful impact.

Additionally, Woodson PTSO is collecting gift cards to raffle at the Annual Holiday Luncheon for the Teachers and Staff on Thursday, December 14. Parents, families and students are invited to donate gift cards; please send donated gift cards to the front office in an envelope addressed to “Attn: Holiday Luncheon Raffle Prizes- Assistant Principal: Kathy Martin and/or PTSO Rep Monica Cameron.” We kindly ask that we receive all donations by Wed. Dec. 13. Please contact PTSO Rep Monica Cameron at monica.cameron@cox.net or 703-608-1289, or Kathy Martin at KAMartin@fcps.edu.

Student-Authored and Student-Led -- Loyal Heart: The Musical

Woodson senior Paul Hardin has spent the last three years writing and composing a two-act musical about the early reign of King Henry VIII entitled Loyal Heart and has enlisted 40 Woodson students in drama, chorus, orchestra, and band to volunteer their time to make Loyal Heart come to life on February 16 and 17, 2018. As a completely student-led production, Loyal Heart gives all participating students a chance to have leadership roles in such areas as music direction, set design and choreography. Loyal Heart is giving the complete cast and crew the opportunity to create something new that has never been done before.

Woodson HS has agreed to produce the musical in the auditorium for two performances on February 16 and 17, 2018, and the Woodson PTSO has awarded a grant to fund the copying costs of the libretto and musical score. However, the project needs additional financial support to provide the costumes and scenery. Would you please consider donating in support of the dedicated students working on Loyal Heart?

Click here for information on how to donate.

Feel free to email pamhardin@verizon.net with any questions or visit the Facebook page @ loyalhearthemusical for more information about this amazing project.

Everyone is welcome and please come by and talk about hockey, learn more about the sport and just hang out. Woodson Ice Hockey had a nail biter game on Friday, Dec.1. We played TC Williams and we were down 0 to 3 at the end of the second period. In the third period Payton Andrews had a hat trick and then Danny Morgan scored assisted by Heather McCall. We tied it up 4 to 4 with 4:46 left in the game. Unfortunately, TC Williams took a shot and scored with 1:26 left in the game! Come on out to our next game on Friday, Dec. 15th at 5:40 pm at Kettler Ice Plex, 627 N. Sports Highlights

Precisionettes

The Prescionettes participated in their first competition of the season December 3 and were big winners! At the Dance Team Union Regional Competition for the 2017-2018 season, held at Fairfax High School, the team won 1st place in Jazz, 2nd place in Pom, and received the Artistry Award for Jazz and the Crowd Appeal Award for Pom. Way to go team! Be on the lookout for more information on their next competition in January, and come out and support the team.

Girls Basketball

WTW Girls Varsity Basketball began its season in promising fashion against quality opposition. Despite the 0-3 start, the combined record of WTW’s first three opponents (Wakefield, Marshall, and Langley) is 7-0 to this point. Buoyed by two quick 3s from sophomore Amelia Noca, Woodson raced out to an 18-10 lead in the opener against Wakefield. Unfortunately, a barrage of six 3s in the 3rd quarter by Wakefield ended up being the difference in this one (45-32). Junior captain Rachel Shurberg paced the Cavs with a career-high 15 points. WTW again raced out to a quick start against Marshall, but again the 3rd quarter proved to be the difference in a 48-35 final. Sophomore Sarah Wilson paced the Cavs with 9 points and her usual shut-down defense. A tough start against perennial powerhouse Langley, again punctuated by a barrage of 3s, resulted in an early deficit. But our girls played the Saxons very evenly the rest of the way as junior captain Natasha Pacheco led the way with 9 points in a balanced attack. In all three games, sophomore Abby Pesansky was her usual force on the glass, grabbing virtually every rebound in sight. One win is all it will take to turn things around for Coach Rastogi’s talented squad. A busy week awaits with road games at Potomac Falls on Monday night, Thomas Jefferson on Wednesday night and a home game against Washington-Lee on Friday night to mark the beginning of the holiday break.

Varsity Wrestling

On December 2nd, the Woodson varsity wrestlers opened their season with a first-place finish in the Bishop Ireton Classic in Alexandria. Woodson outdistanced a field of both private and public schools from Virginia, DC, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Delaware, winning by 51.5 points over the second-place team. The Cavaliers dominated the competition with 4 individual champions (Anthony Martin, Logan Baird, Diego Pedulla-Smith, and Max Sheehe), 3 second place finishers (Joey Martin, Paul Cannata, and C.J. Bronzi), 4 third place finishers (Jeremy Zema, Nico Jaworski, Jack Swanton, and Cal Hurlebaus) and 1 fourth place finisher (Dominic Cannata). Special congratulations to Wayne Burger, Jay Swallow, C.J. Bronzi, Nico Jaworski, Max Sheehe, Dominic Cannata, Cal Hurelbaus, and Cole Steiner for recording their first-ever varsity wins.

Varsity Swim and Dive

Swim - Congratulations to the WTW Swim & Dive team on their second victory for the season against Hayfield on 12/8! Final scores were 243-68 for the Boys and 248-77 for the Girls! We had an outstanding meet as a) 51 of our swimmers achieved best times, b) Our team finished in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for all 6 of the relay events, and c) we had no individual finish below 5th place!

Dive- Both our Boy and Girl divers were exceptional at our meet this week! Both our boy and girl divers swept and special congrats goes to Lindsey Butchko on qualifying for regionals!

Overall W.T. Woodson accomplished maritime marvels in the pool and on the board at both their meets! WTW WHAT?!

Woodson Athletic Boosters would like to thank its sponsors: Sun Design, Nicely Done Kitchens, Turnpike Basketball, MindWorks, Oh George Tables and Taphouse.
