Homework and the Holidays

As we head into the winter break, FCPS believes that these breaks should be dedicated to family and friends.  This is the time to take a break from the rigors of school to rest and relax.  In that spirit, here are the guidelines provided to our staff to ensure you and your family can have a most enjoyable winter break.

Teachers should not assign work over the holiday with an expected due date being the first class day we return from a break.  Also, tests will not be administered the first class day back.  For winter break, those dates are Tuesday, January 2nd or Wednesday, January 3rd.

Long Term Projects:  Depending upon how the student has managed the interim due dates of the project, nothing should be due upon their return to class; however, if they are behind on a long-term project, the student may need to work on it over the break to get caught up.

On behalf of the faculty and staff at Woodson High School, we wish you and your family a safe, relaxing and happy holiday and New Year.

Winter Performances

Woodson was filled with music all week with Winter performances by band, orchestra, and chorus!  Congratulations to our performing arts students and teachers for their outstanding concerts and to the community for their support.

Writing Center News

The Writing Center has been very busy this fall!  We support students from all grade levels in almost all subjects.  Since the beginning of the second quarter, 177 students have come to the Writing Center.  In the first 3 months of tutoring, we have tutored over 850 times.

Tutors especially love when students come early during the writing process to brainstorm or get help with a draft.

Writing Center students also had the opportunity to attend the Capital Area Peer Tutoring Association, CAPTA, Convention at George Mason's Arlington campus earlier this month.  Three students prepared and facilitated a session on why students procrastinate in the writing process and how teachers and writing centers can spur them to come for tutoring earlier in the process for more successful writing.  Tutoring centers from up and down the east coast attended this conference.  It was a wonderful experience!

Math Honor Society News

In November and December, the Math Honor Society went to Mantua, Wakefield Forest, Fairfax Villa, Oak View, Little Run, and Canterbury Woods Elementary Schools where we worked with over 300 2nd and 3rd graders.

The Math Honor Society students ran a matching equivalent fractions game, an adding and subtracting numbers relay, playing card place value game and three-digit rounding number dice game.  We had a great time working with our future Cavaliers and are looking forward to working with the 4th and 5th grade students in March!

Food Deliveries

Please remember that no outside food can be delivered to Woodson during the school day.  This includes deliveries from local restaurants and delivery services like Uber Eats and Grubhub.  If food is delivered, the student cannot pick it up until dismissal.

If your child forgets his/her lunch, food may be dropped off by a parent/family member to Woodson's main office for student pickup.

Student Transportation During the School Day

If your child needs transportation home during the school day (e.g., your student is sick), staff will contact a parent/guardian first, then will begin contacting designated persons listed on his/her Emergency Care Information form

Woodson staff may release a student to the people designated on the Emergency Care Information form or to others for whom the custodial parent provides written consent.  FCPS is not responsible for other transportation arrangements made by parents (e.g., Uber, Lyft, or taxi service).

Welcome to the Woodson Clinic
