12/18/17 - 01/01/18 Winter Break
(School Office Closed)
Winter PTA Event Date Change from Jan 18th to Jan 17th, Wednesday
Dear Stenwood Families:
Thanks for supporting our SCA’s food drive. We had over 1308 items donated and they will be given to Food for Others. Our students were very excited watching the pile of goods grow as families gave so generously. Thank you.
Our fifth and sixth graders had a wonderful Battle of the Books this past Friday. I am proud of our students’ initiative to read and become experts regarding so many novels. They also exhibited excellent team work. Congratulations to Mrs. Shepherd’s class in bringing home the coveted Stennie trophy.
We could use your help. If you’ve inadvertently slipped into the habit of running late in the mornings, please resolve to make an adjustment to rectify that situation. Teachers begin the instructional day at 8:30, as soon as the first student enters the room. The first bell rings at 8:30, and all students are expected to be within their classrooms by 8:40 when the second bell rings. Students who arrive to their classrooms after 8:40 are marked tardy. Thank you for your assistance.
As winter break approaches, I want to wish you and your family a wonderful break. I hope you have a great time with family and friends. In an effort to support our students in receiving that same joyful time with family and friends, we are refraining from assigning homework over the break. Nor will we have any tests on January 2nd, upon their return from break. It is our hope that this will allow everyone a true rest and the time to engage in family traditions. Enjoy and see you in the new year.
Sincerely, Principal Dammeyer Assistant Principal Riley
School Outdoor Activity Guidelines for the Cold Weather
During this time of year and typical winter days, we often have to consider a number of factors related to student activity outdoors. Common sense requires us to look beyond a specific temperature and consider factors such as wind chill, whether the ground is frozen or the sun is shining, how well the children are prepared to play outdoors (jackets, gloves, and hats), what activity the children are participating in, and the length of time to be spent outside. It is the intention of the school to hold recess during cold spells and that parents should have their children prepared to play outdoors (jackets, gloves, and hats). During a NWS Wind Chill Advisory we limit recess to no more than fifteen minutes. During a NWS Wind Chill Warning, we do not allow any outdoor activity. Outdoor activity includes general and physical education classes, recess, and scheduled fire drills. This does not include students walking to and from school, students waiting at bus stops, or student patrols.
