The NHS Induction Ceremony will now be held in Cavalier Hall on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at 7:00 PM, instead of the Auditorium. Please use entrances 7 and 8 in order to have the quickest route to Cavalier Hall.
Attention all 10th grade students and their
parents. The next Partners for Safe Teen Driving parent/teen seminar at
Woodson is coming up on Thursday, November 30th. The program
starts at 7:00 PM and will be in Cavalier Hall. Please note the venue change
from the Auditorium to Cav Hall. If the teen and their parent are
planning on coming, you do not need to preregister. Just show up before 7:00 PM
because the program will start promptly. The next program after November
30th is Thursday, January 11th at 7:00 PM in the Auditorium.
Questions? Please contact John Duffy at jdduffy@fcps.edu.
The Winter Blood Drive will be held on December 7th in the Aux Gym.
All students are able to sign up and participate by either finding a Key Club Member in the Cafeterias during all lunches or by going directly to Ms. Elva Card's classroom in G106. Students are required to be at least 16 years of age and weigh at least 110lbs. All students are also required to have a parental consent form signed.
Inova needs 250 units a day, just for regular needs in this area, so we are hoping to supply a large amount of those units! The Attendance Office will be monitoring students attendance.
As part of our ongoing effort to improve our school culture here
at Woodson, we are going to be engaging a great exercise during 6b Return on November
21st.
All
your student needs to do is bring a school-appropriate item that they believe represents
them or their culture. That does not have to be limited to race or ethnicity
- it can be anything they believe captures a part of their identity. Classmates will then place the item in a box in there 6b classroom. When the item is
picked from the box, they will share the impact it has had on them and why it is
part of their identity or culture.
This
exercise is a really good way to get to know other classmates and teachers
better, and is not labor intensive at all. We'd really love to see everyone
participate and grow through this process, so please make sure to remember to
bring something!

Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL)
End-of-Course Tests will be offered to
identified seniors, transfer students, and students needing retakes, between
Monday, December 4, 2017, and Thursday, December 14, 2017. Notification of specific tests, dates and
times was provided to students this week.
It is
important that your child attend school on these days. If possible, please
avoid scheduling trips or appointments that would take your child out of school
during this time period. It is also important that your child have a good
night’s rest and a healthy breakfast before testing. If you become aware of an
unavoidable conflict that could result in your child missing a testing day,
please notify your child’s school counselor as soon as possible.
If you
have questions about SOL testing, please contact your child’s school counselor
or Ms. Guinee, Woodson’s Assessment Coach (kpguinee@fcps.edu).

If you have yet to fill out and turn in the Impact Aid Student-Parent Survey form, please have your student return them as soon as possible to their 8th period teacher. 100% participation is critical
for obtaining our fair share of federal funding.
The process is straight forward. If your employment has no
federal connection, please check the box in section 5, sign and date the form,
and return. If your employment is connected to the federal government or
military, please complete either section 2, 3, or 4 where appropriate
and sign, date, and return the form.
As
you anticipate family travel for the Thanksgiving holiday and you know your
student will be absent on Wednesday, November 22nd, please help the Attendance
Office by calling the attendance line (703-503-4800, option 1) at any time
between now and November 21st.
This
will enable the Attendance Office to process the high number of calls they
receive for that day in a more timely fashion.

thank you for your support!

Parents, please adhere to parking signs when on school
grounds. We have many activities and programs going on at Woodson High
School every night and we recognize parking can be a premium. We
have worked with transportation to move some of the busses to open up more
parking out front, yet we still have people parking in fire lanes and reserved
24/7 spots. Other entrances are open around the exterior of the building
and we encourage parking at all entrances not just entrance 1. Please
also be mindful that Kiss and Ride is set up to keep our students, staff and
parents safe. Please adhere to those traffic patterns as well.
Nominations are now open for the Outstanding Employee Awards!
You may submit more than one nomination. Preliminary nominations
require 1-2 short paragraphs about how the employee demonstrates exceptional
work in the criteria for their given category (Teacher, New Teacher, Principal, Leader, Support Employee,
Hourly Employee).
The deadline to
submit a nomination is December 1. Please contact Adam Entenberg, Woodson Awards
Liaison, at atentenberg@fcps.edu with your nominations or any questions.
As we head into the holiday season, I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know/remind you about our school work policy for both Thanksgiving and the Winter break.
Fairfax County schools believes that these breaks should be
dedicated to family and friends. This is the time to take a break from the
rigors of school to rest and relax. In that spirit, here are the guidelines
that I have provided our staff to ensure you and your family can have a most
enjoyable Thanksgiving and winter break.
Teachers should not assign work over the holiday with an
expected due date being the first day we return from a break.
- Thanksgiving Break - Nov. 27th
or Nov. 28th
- Winter Break – Jan. 2nd or Jan.

Tests will not be administered the first class day back.
- Thanksgiving Break - Nov. 27th
or Nov. 28th
- Winter Break – Jan. 2nd or Jan.

Long Term Projects:
Depending upon how the student has managed the interim due
dates of the project, nothing should be due upon their return to class;
however, if they are behind on a long-term project, the student may need to
work on it over the holiday to get caught up.
On
behalf of the faculty and staff at Woodson High School, we wish you and your
family a safe, relaxing and happy Thanksgiving.
