End of Quarter Updates

First Quarter Report Cards

Report cards have been distributed to students.  We are very proud of the exceptional performance of our students. .We applaud their accomplishments and thank parents for being supportive extensions to the classroom.  As a family, please take this opportunity to look beyond grades and GPA.  Engage in "GPS conversations" that serve as a guide during a journey of intentional learning and personal growth.  What is joyful?  What is a challenge?  How are passions being explored?  If help is needed, what is the plan?  Please reach out to a teacher or counselor if your conversations need to extend beyond your home.

New Principal Video

The Office of Communication and Community Relations for FCPS has created a Meet the Principal video.  Dr. Bonitatibus highlights the vibrant and comprehensive educational experiences that make TJHSST a premier STEM school.  Click here to see talented teachers and students in action!

Thanksgiving = Time for Family

The entire TJHSST faculty and staff wish all families a heartfelt thank you for all you do to support the Colonial Spirit!  We would not be who we are today if not for your tireless dedication, volunteerism, sacrifice and leadership you bring to us each day.

For that reason, we wish to give families the gift of time during the holiday break.  No homework will be assigned over the holiday.  This means nothing is due on Monday, November 27, nor will any assessments be given on that day.  We want our students to enjoy a mental health break and have time to connect with family.  Remember we dismiss at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 22. Enjoy the holiday!

Safety and Security

Finishing touches from the renovation are ongoing as TJHSST is upgraded with safety and security provisions found throughout FCPS high schools.  Exterior cameras were installed this past summer along with electronic key fob enhancements that facilitate staff entry.  A visitor buzzer system that was located just outside the main office has been moved to the main entrance outside the Dome.  Remember to push the button, state your name, and the purpose of your visit.  You will be greeted in a friendly manner as you are buzzed in and welcomed to our school.

The final phase of security involves a plan for new interior cameras.  This plan was developed two years ago during the construction phase of the renovation.  For several years during the renovation, cameras were already used on the exterior of the learning cottages (portable trailers), akin to monitoring outdoor hallways.

The new interior cameras are proposed only for open areas such as hallways and entryways, along with public common areas such as the gymnasium, auditorium and cafeteria.  They will never be placed in classrooms, workrooms, or private areas such as restrooms and locker rooms.  The cameras are intended for safety of staff, students and visitors.  They also help secure valuable instructional equipment, deter certain activities and help with investigations as needed.  Finally, they are visible, not hidden, and only record images, not audio.

Prior to advancing any plan, Dr. Bonitatibus will hold a community meeting in early December where she will invite feedback and questions.  Anyone who cannot attend will be able to submit comments online.  She has already held initial discussions with staff, SGA leaders, tjToday journalists, and the TJ Human Relations Committee.  She also mentioned first steps at the recent PTSA Principal's Coffee.

Additional details with be announced in the coming weeks.
