Sports Highlights

Volleyball

The Woodson Volleyball team went to the District playoffs last week. In the District semifinals vs Fairfax on 11/1, the Cavaliers won 3-1. Senior captain Brenna Gannon did a great job blocking, and senior middle Maddi Jack gave the offense a boost with her famous slides.

District finals were the following night on 11/2 vs West Springfield. The Cavaliers tried their best, but lost 1-3.

Patriot District 1st team All-District awards were presented to 3 Woodson players before the match: Senior captains Brenna Gannon, Gabi Lyons, and Sophia Mackin. Gabi Lyons was also named the Patriot District Libero of the Year, and Coach Len Palaschak was named Patriot District Coach of the Year. Congratulations on a terrific season, Cavaliers!

Varsity Field Hockey

For the regional semi-final the Lady Cavaliers hosted the Lake Braddock Bruins. Goals were scored by Olivia Rummel and senior Emma Hartzler. The defense organized by goal keeper, Cailin Bownas, maintained their reputation of delivering shut-outs (87% of wins were shut-outs). Final score, 2-0 to the Cavaliers!

The Lady Cavaliers travelled to the Fairfax Rebels with great student support for the regional final. The first half was great field hockey, but no goals. In the second half, both teams had excellent chances. Bownas was called in rapid succession to make several critical saves. The game went into extra time. An absolutely determined Anna Stribling won the ball in midfield, took it down the sideline confidently, and when challenged crossed to senior Rachel Williams. Williams whipped the ball on-target with one touch. Hartzler took the deflected ball and put it in the back of the goal.

1-0, Woodson Cavaliers Regional Champions!

Girls Cross Country

The Lady Cavaliers ended the season with an impressive 4th place performance at Regionals. Although it was a little bittersweet that they didn't move on to the State meet, this was the best regional performance by the Lady Cavs since 1994 when that team also finished 4th. The team lead by Grace Eidson who was All Region in 12th and will continue on to the state meet as an individual for the second year in row. She was followed by Naylle Pando, Ansley Pfeiffer, Paige Fowler, Caroline Poole, Jackie Willey, and Jesse Silkowitiz. Congratulations on a great season to the whole Girls Cross Country Team!

Boys Cross Country

The Boys Cross Country team had a banner day at Regionals by finishing 2nd place! This is the best performance by a boys Woodson team at Regionals since 1967 when the team also finished 2nd! The Cavaliers were lead by Abid Hassan with a 6th place performance, followed by Jack Leech in 12th, Aslan Abrishami Azar in 13th (all three of these guys earned All Region honors), John Leal, Alex Posadas-Nava, Taylor Gibson and John Gilligan. They will race again next Friday at the VHSL 6A State Meet. Congratulations!

Woodson Athletic Boosters would like to thank its sponsors: Sun Design, Nicely Done Kitchens, Turnpike Basketball, MindWorks, Oh George Tables and Taphouse.
