Sports Highlights
Volleyball
It
was another tremendous week for the Woodson Volleyball teams, because freshmen,
JV, and Varsity did not drop a single set! Thanks to everyone who came out to
support our Dig Pink night for breast cancer research on Tuesday, October 10.
It was a fun home game against Fairfax HS. Freshmen won 2-0, JV won 2-0, and
Varsity won 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-19). Senior middle hitter Hannah McHale had a
great match with plenty of blocks, digs, and a terrific serving run.
Thursday,
October 12 was a home game against South County. Cavaliers were on fire again,
with freshmen winning 2-0, JV winning 2-0, and Varsity winning 3-0 (25-13,
25-16, 25-20). The blockers shut down the South County offense, and the hitters
found the holes in their defense. Overall a great week of clean sweeps.
Congratulations, Lady Cavaliers!
Next
up volleyball has 2 away games at Lake Braddock and West Springfield on October
17 and 19.
Varsity Field
Hockey
For
the final game of the season, the Lady Cavalier Varsity Field Hockey team
welcomed the Fairfax Rebels. An end to end match that had chances on goal at
both ends of the field. For the one score of the match, Bella Hite crossed from
wide, Senior Rachel Williams controlled the ball and passed to fellow Senior
Emma Hartzler who put the ball in the back of the goal. Olivia Rummel had
multiple tackles and interceptions to help preserve the shut-out. Cavs win,
1-0! District play-offs take place this week!
Girls Cross
Country
This
past weekend the Cross Country Ladies competed in two invitationals, Glory Day
Invitational at Bull Run Park and The Great American Cross Country Festival in
Cary, North Carolina. The Varsity ladies took a long drive to North Carolina
this weekend to clean up the Blue Division race, winning first place by 38
points. The rest of the team stayed in Virginia to compete at the Glory Days
Invitational, and despite the unseasonal heat, did extremely well in both of
their races for the day. For the freshman race, four of our ladies came in, in
the top 50 with the top scorer being Jesse Silkowitz. The last race of the day
was our JV race, a solid performance for Woodson with Sam Weiss as our top
scorer. Also on Tuesday, the ladies competed in a district meet at Franconia
Park with the top scorer being Olivia Brennan.
Boys Cross
Country
This past weekend the Cross Country Boys competed in two invitationals,
Glory Day Invitational at Bull Run Park and The Great American Cross Country
Festival in Cary, North Carolina. Our varsity team traveled down to North
Carolina and swept the Red Division race, placing first by 49 points. The rest
of the team stayed back in Virginia to race the Glory Days Invitational, and
despite a medical set back and a blisteringly hot day, the boys raced very well
in both races. In the freshman race, Woodson's top scorer was Sean Duble coming
in 37th overall. In the JV race Taylor Gibson took first for Woodson, placing
3rd in the race. Also on Tuesday, Woodson competed in a district meet at
Franconia Park for the final time this season with their top scorer being
Daniel Niemen.
