What’s New?

1. Buy a Brick and Make a Lasting Mark for your Student!

The Woodson PTSO will continue to raise money by selling engraved bricks. The brick courtyard in front of the school, between the main entrance and the auditorium, still has plenty of room for bricks for you to remember your special student. Individual bricks cost: $100. Engraved bricks will be intermixed with regular paver bricks. They make great graduation presents for Seniors, or as a great legacy for all the members of your family! 2. Chick-fil-A Woodson Crew Fundraiser

Come out to support Woodson Crew on Thursday, October 12 from 5 to 8 PM at Chick-fil-A located at Fairfax Circle! Please let the cashier/person taking your order that you are there to Pull for Woodson Crew prior to ordering.  Thank you and hope you can make it!


3. Chorus

Please join us tonight, Monday 10/2, in the auditorium for our Mini-Concert, Booster Meeting, and Dessert Fundraiser kick-off. Europe and Spring Trip Payments are due tonight! Students: Check Blackboard for arrival times, wear your chorus shirt & jeans for the yearbook picture.

Saturday, October 7: Field Day, all Woodson Feeder School Students are invited.


4. Homecoming Dance Tickets

Tickets for the Woodson Homecoming Dance will go on sale beginning Tuesday, October 10, during all lunches. A ticket to the dance costs $20. Students can pay using cash or a check (made payable to Woodson HS). The price for tickets will go to $25 on Thursday, October 19. Any student wishing to bring a guest from another school must pick up and complete a guest application form which can be found in the main office. The dance will take place on Saturday, October 21 in main gym from 8-11:30pm.


5. Homecoming Day Activities

The Homecoming Parade is Friday, October 20, 4:00 – 5:00PM. It starts from the Woodson bus lane and returns to the junior parking lot. Immediately following the parade is the Pre-game Pig-out (Friday, October 20, 5:00 – 6:30) located on the outdoor basketball courts. Join us fun, games, face painting, moon bounce, food trucks, and more before the Homecoming game.


6. Powder Puff and Bonfire – Saturday, October 14

The Powder Puff games will take place on Saturday, October 14 in the Football Stadium. The freshmen vs sophomore game will take place at 6:00pm and the junior vs senior game will start at 7:15pm. Admission to the Powder puff games is $5 but free to Woodson students with their student ID. Immediately following the last game will be the Homecoming Bonfire. The concession stand will be open for both events.


7. See The Capitol Steps at Woodson!

Why drive downtown when you can see them nearby? The Capitol Steps are coming to the Woodson Auditorium on Sunday, Oct 15 at 7:00 PM. The proceeds from this event will support drama student trips to the Virginia State Thespian Conference, New York City, and beyond! Don't miss this night of incredible satire and comedy! Get your tickets here and be ready to put the mock in democracy!


8. Tools for Opportunities – 17 October, 7 pm, Cav Hall

Know everything available to you! Discover the amazing, free tools provided to our parents (and students) – tools that will help you stay on top of things and discover opportunities for your students. These opportunities include everything from basic information you need, to internships, employment opportunities, colleges, training, scholarships, the ability to get emails sent by counselors and the Career Center, and much MUCH more. Hope to see you there.


9. Welcome to Woodson New Family Follow-up Meeting

The Welcome to Woodson New Family Program is for parents with students/families that have transferred/relocated to Woodson High School this year (again, those with sophomores, juniors, or seniors who are new to the school or freshmen who did not spend a full year at Frost or Lanier Middle Schools).

On Tuesday, October 3 from 7-8pm in Cafeteria A, the Welcome to Woodson PTSO Team will provide an opportunity for new Woodson parents to meet as a group with Woodson staff and experienced parents. The focus topic is: "How is your student's transition going and How is your family's transition to Woodson going?"

10. Advertise in the Woodson Student Directory and Online– the DEADLINE to submit is fast approaching

If you are interested in submitting an ad for the student directory and online (new this year!) is fast approaching. 11. Athletic Booster Passes

Woodson Athletic Booster passes are now on sale for $50 per pass for a student, $80 per adult, $200 for a family of 4 (see other combinations online). The cost of attending events has gone up to $6.00 per ticket, so the Booster Pass pays for itself in NINE GAMES for a student, (thirteen games for an adult) ! If you buy your pass now your student can use it to get into football, volleyball and field hockey games and then basketball, etc. in the winter; you can begin now to recoup your return on investment. Why pay $6 each time? Please make sure you buy yours soon - you can use them for any and all non-playoff home events at all three levels of competition for any sport. Funds from the Booster passes go toward many things for our students including things such as sports equipment, field and athletic facilities maintenance, uniforms, pins, certificates and letter awards, don’s johns, and many other things to support our Woodson student athletes and community.

13. DECA Fundraiser at Potbelly

Please come join DECA on Tuesday, October 3 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at Potbelly at Fair City Mall. 25% of all profits goes toward supporting Woodson DECA students in their training, state, and national competitions! 15. Grant Program – Accepting Applications until Oct 27

Do you have a terrific idea to improve education at W.T. Woodson? The PTSO wants to hear about it and partner with you in its success! If you are in need of financial assistance for your classroom, students, activity or organization, we invite teachers, staff, and parents, with a current PTSO membership, to submit grant applications beginning Monday September 25, 2017.Click here for the full grant program, and mark your calendars with these important dates:

16. ISO: Donations of Sturdy Shelves for the PTSO Closet

The PTSO is looking for donations of sturdy shelves for the PTSO closet. We will use these shelves to organize the new PTSO Teacher Supply "store." (More information will be coming regarding the new supply store!) If you have shelving to donate, please email Melissa French at vp1@woodsonptso.org.


17. Math Center

The Woodson Math Center is now open for business! The Math Center is a tutoring resource that is staffed by our best Math students. Our Math tutors can help your student out with their math homework, their test corrections, and any other math needs they may have. The center is located in B208 and is open during all lunches (5th and 6th period), 5th and 6th returns and after school on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays . 18. Mock ACT/SAT Exams- Saturday, October 28

The Mock SAT/Mock ACT is Saturday, October 28, from 7:30am-12noon in the Woodson Lecture Hall. The Score Report Review Session is Thursday, November 16, 7:00-8:30 PM in the Lecture Hall. Current Juniors should not miss this great opportunity, as they will begin actual SAT and ACT testing in the spring! This year the Woodson PTSO is pleased once again to have Mindworks Educational Services host this year's Mock SAT and Mock ACT. All students must register in advance so that Mindworks has an accurate headcount. The cost is $15 when paid in advance OR $20 when paid on October 28.

19. October Workshops, Training, and Online Resources and Support Groups

The W.T. Woodson PTSO is committed to providing and sharing programs and information to help parents, teachers, and students navigate high school and beyond. The wide range of issues includes but is not limited to: parenting advice; homework resources; special education; ADHD support; coping with stress; mental health; and drug use.

20. Pre-order Your Copy of the WTW Student Directory

PTSO Student/Staff Directories will be available shortly after the student/family data is released from the front office in October. To ensure that we don’t underestimate or overestimate the number of directories we need to print, the PTSO is encouraging all families to pre-purchase your directory via the same link used to join the PTSO, http://www.woodsonptso.org/join-ptso.html; just scroll down to the bottom of the fillable form and look for the prompt “Would you like to order a directory?”

Sports Highlights 

Precisionette Dance Team

The Precisionettes participated in the Walk Off Parkinson's walk and fundraiser on Sept. 24, at National's Park. The walk is family-friendly event to support those in the community affected by Parkinson's disease. It also includes educational resources for those who are looking for more information on Parkinson's, including the opportunity to talk with specialists in the area. It was a great opportunity for the girls to make an impact in the community and support this worthy cause. Click here to see pictures from the event. Volleyball

Last week the Lady Cavaliers Varsity Field Hockey team travelled to the Lake Braddock Bruins.  Margaret Stephan had a great varsity debut on left wing.  The game was a draw through most of overtime, but with 3:49 left senior Rachel Williams found fellow senior Emma Hartzler for the golden goal.  Zoe Hite and Anna Stribling worked nonstop and were the engines in the midfield.  Final score, 1-0 Cavaliers!

Later in the week, the Lady Cavs travelled to the Westfield Bulldogs for a tough match against a top-ranked opponent.  Despite the score, the Lady Cavs played a determined game.  Rachel Williams was all over the midfield trying to create a opportunity to attack the goal showing constant determination.  Lady Cavs are back in action on Wednesday at the home of the West Springfield Spartans!

Also, other races in the day included Varsity B races for upper and lower classmen. In that race, Woodson’s top scorer for the junior/senior race was senior Amelia Vogel. Racing continued for the cavaliers on Tuesday in a district meet at Franconia Park. In another great performance for Woodson, the top scorer for the Woodson ladies was freshman Isabella Decarlo.

Boys Cross Country

This past weekend the boys’ cross country team participated in the DCXC Invitational. Races lasted all day and Woodson’s ladies had many incredible performances.
