What’s New?
1. Advertise Your
Business in the Student Directory and Support Woodson
The Woodson PTSO is offering local businesses the opportunity to
advertise in our school directory. This year, we are offering something new -
two levels of advertising:
a) print only
b) print and online exposure on the PTSO website and acknowledgement in
the PTSO's newsletters.
Click here for pricing and submission details.
If
you are interested in advertising a full page inside front cover, full page
inside back cover, full page opposite inside back cover or a back cover of the
student directory, contact Meri Farling TODAY at merifarling@hotmail.com; we will be
conducting a cover placement raffle and Meri needs to know who is interested by
close of business Monday, 9/18, today. We apologize for the short
turn-around; please contact Meri at 703-599-5751 or via email at merifarling@hotmail.com
with any questions or concerns.
The deadline
to email Meri all other ads is September 25, 2017.
Note: All advertisements on the PTSO website are subject to approval
according to FCPS regulations and the W. T. Woodson PTSO Bylaws.
2. Athletic Booster Passes
Woodson Athletic Booster passes are now on sale for $50 per pass for a
student, $80 per adult, $200 for a family of 4 (see other combinations online).
The cost of attending events has gone up to $6.00 per ticket, so the Booster
Pass pays for itself in NINE GAMES for a student, (thirteen games for an adult)
! If you buy your pass now your student can use it to get into football, volleyball
and field hockey games and then basketball, etc. in the winter; you can begin
now to recoup your return on investment. Why pay $6 each time? Please make sure
you buy yours soon - you can use them for any and all non-playoff home events
at all three levels of competition for any sport. Click here to purchase
passes online using PayPal or download a Membership form and mail it and a
check to the address listed on the form.
Funds from the Booster passes go toward many things for our students
including things such as sports equipment, field and athletic facilities
maintenance, uniforms, pins, certificates and letter awards, don’s johns, and
many other things to support our Woodson student athletes and community.
3. Car Wash to Benefit the Orchestra Boosters
Start the school year off with a clean car and support Woodson's
Orchestra students at the same time! Stop by Woodson to get your car washed
from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, 9/23. The car wash will take place in
the Performing Arts Wing parking lot behind the school.
4. ISO: Donations
of Sturdy Shelves for the PTSO Closet
The PTSO is looking for
donations of sturdy shelves for the PTSO closet. We will use these shelves
to organize the new PTSO Teacher Supply "store." (More
information will be coming regarding the new supply store!) If you have shelving
to donate, please email Melissa French at vp1@woodsonptso.org.
5. Mason District
Running Festival
On September 23 Mason District Park in Annandale will be hosting the second
Mason District Running Festival, which is a multi-race running event. There is
no registration fee, though those who are able and willing to gift back are
welcome to do so, though not required. The event starts at 8 am with 6-hour
run, an hour later starts 5K, then Kids Fun Run, etc. The fun ends at 2 pm.
People can participate at one or more events; only the Kids Fun Run has an age
limit. Click here for more details.
6. Milk and Cookies!
On Thursday, September 28, we will be celebrating our Woodson students with
milk and cookies. For those of you new to the school, this is a great
tradition. Parent volunteers make hundreds of dozens of cookies and the school
donates milk boxes. After school on September 28, parent volunteers pass out
baggies of cookies and milk to each student at Woodson! In order for this to be
successful, we need LOTS of help. Sign up here to donate
cookies and/or to help distribute on September 28. It's a great way to see
smiling students :) Any questions, please email Shannon Murphy at shannon.murphy29@gmail.com.
7. Pre-order Your Copy of the WTW Student Directory
PTSO
Student/Staff Directories will be available shortly after the student/family

underestimate or overestimate the number of directories we need to print, the
PTSO is encouraging all families to pre-purchase your directory via the same
link used to join the PTSO, http://www.woodsonptso.org/join-ptso.html;
just scroll down to the bottom of the fillable form and look for the prompt
“Would you like to order a directory?”

Student Directory" option is available near the bottom of the form.
Click

is available on the PTSO website.

8. Staff Self-Care –
Signup Today to Help
One of the events the PTSO sponsors is Staff Self-Care Days. These days
are offered for the staff several times a year (3-5) during a 2-hour period,
10:45am-1:45pm. The purpose is to provide a few minutes of “nourishment” for
our staff and teachers who play a very important role in the lives of our kids.
Staff is invited to come down to Cav Hall to enjoy yoga, mindfulness, massage,
therapy dogs, healthy treats & tea, and tips on self-care. This brief
escape is one way that we support Woodson’s Cav Culture of being: Proactive /
Accountable / Empathetic / Respectful / Connected. This is a great way to
support Woodson and its staff with a very manageable time commitment. I just
need a few volunteers to help things run smoothly!
How can you support this initiative?
- “Host” one (or more) of the Self Care Days (2 ½ hour commitment). This is super simple; volunteer for any of the dates (TBD), 10:45am-1:45pm to welcome the staff as they arrive and guide them to the different options for that day (yoga, mindfulness, chair yoga etc).
- Vendor Contact/Healthy Treats: help contact healthy food vendors & invite them to join the Staff Self Care Day.
- Vendor Contact/Wellness Businesses: help contact wellness related businesses (yoga, massage, acupuncture, tai chi, etc.) & invite them to join the Staff Self Care Day.
If you are interested in volunteering, you can sign up here.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact:Mary Beth Quick, mbquick@heartandsoulyogava.com or 4quick@verizon.net.

Sports Highlights
Volleyball
On September 5,
Woodson Volleyball took on the Mt. Vernon Majors and all 3 teams won in
straight sets! Freshmen 25-16 and 25-8; JV 25-15 and 25-12; and Varsity 25-8,
25-21, and 25-10. Way to go, Cavaliers!
On September 11, Woodson Volleyball teams played at TC
Williams "Remember the Titans". The JV team extended their undefeated
streak 25-11, 25-16! After dropping the first set 19-25, the Varsity team
turned it around and dominated the next three sets 25-12, 25-17, and 25-18 to
win the match. Junior outside hitter Alexandria Osser brought the heat with 17
kills! The first conference game of the season is coming up on Tuesday,
9/19 at South County. Keep it up, Cavaliers!
Field Hockey
This
week, the Lady Cavalier Varsity field hockey team visited the Robinson Rams. The
score was 0-0 at halftime. Senior Georgia Rafter made a tremendous effort
winning the ball on the baseline and finding Senior Emma Hartzler who scored. Olivia
Rummel put the ball powerfully on target and Bella Hite got a piece of it for
the goal. Bella was a tireless spark plug in the midfield. Through overtime,
score remained 2-2. With a spectacular shootout performance in goal, Cailin
Bownas, and the Cavaliers got the 3-2 win.
Next
were the Fairfax Rebels. The game remained a scoreless draw at half time. In
the second half, Gwyneth Durosko drove to baseline for a cross and Emma
Hartzler latched onto it for a goal. A series of Fairfax penalty corners in the
final seconds of the game kept the fans on edge, but the Lady Cavs hung tough
for the win.
Football
A
beautiful thing happened on the Woodson football field this past Saturday
morning. Thirty members of the WT Woodson football team, players, managers and
coaches, volunteered their time to work with the Champion Football League, a league
for individuals with disabilities. Players formed part of a long spirit tunnel
cheering on the kids as they ran through and their names were announced over
the loud speaker. WTW players and Champion League players set up on the 20 yard
line, complete with a snap and pretend blocking, so that each Champion league
participant could score a touchdown and hear their name announced over the
loudspeaker. There were many high fives, pretend tackles and lots of cheering
from the WTW players for these amazing participants on a very hot day. Coach
Van Acker has set up for WTW to host the Champion League games at our WTW
football stadium every Saturday from 12-1 through the first weekend in November
(no event on the Saturday of bye week and homecoming).
The
Champion Football League was launched by the Down Syndrome Association to
provide a safe and fun environment where individuals with special needs can
experience the excitement and camaraderie associated with team football— the
excitement of the sport, the unity of a team, the support of the fans, and the
reward of players pushing themselves to achieve. But most importantly, it's
about every player contributing his or her own unique abilities to the team. Click here for more
information about the league.
Come
on over to WTW on a Saturday from 12-1 to cheer on the Champion League players!
Congratulations to the WTW football program on their participation in this
league and this beautiful way of giving back to the community.
Woodson Athletic Boosters would like to thank its sponsors: HB
Services, Elhady Orthodontics, Fairfax VW, Cruise Planners.
