Glasgow Community Gazette - July 30

Glasgow Community -

I hope you were able to enjoy the great weather we had earlier this week and time off this weekend.  I had the opportunity to spend time with my younger brother, a teacher in Kansas City, Missouri, who is attending the Advanced Placement Conference downtown. We went to last night's Nationals game and had a great time catching up.

This past week, it was fun to welcome students enrolled in our free Algebra Boot Camp taught by Hannah Kim and J.E.B. Stuart teacher, Emily McCloud. It was great to see so many smiling faces while building a solid foundation in their math skills, even after four hours of Algebra each day.

Special thanks to the volunteers on Saturday who assembled over 2,300 school supply kits for distribution to students in the Stuart Pyramid, including Glasgow Middle School. The Stuart Pyramid Resource Fair will be held on August 10 at Stuart High School and we are expecting thousands of students and family members to attend to gather free school supplies, get free haircuts, pick up free books, and get free eye exams, as well as access numerous county related services. This video will give you an idea of what it was like if you missed it. https://vimeo.com/142014376 or check out the website at http://www.stuartpyramidfair.org/

Last week we unveiled our new format for this weekly Glasgow Gazette to parents and the community.  This week, we are excited to announce that we have updated our Facebook page that now includes upcoming events, photos and links to our Twitter and Youtube accounts. Check it out!  Link: https://www.facebook.com/GlasgowMS.FCPS/

Finally, Carmon Golden, our Director of Student Services, and I look forward to meeting some of you at our New Student Parent Coffee on Tuesday, August 1 from 8-10am. We will be available to answer any questions regarding the upcoming transition to Glasgow Middle School.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions and have a great week.

Sincerely,
Shawn DeRose
Principal

Article of the Week

As a huge fan of the TV show The West Wing, I recently discovered the podcast, “West Wing Weekly.” Each week the podcast reviews an episode starting with the pilot through the last episode of series. Podcasts can also be a great way to “learn about something new or just being entertained." Below are few podcasts focused on parenting, ones you can listen to with your student (and not be bored), and ones that are great for your student to listen to on their own.

Important Immunization Requirement - Incoming 6th Grade Students
Sixth grade students cannot begin school in September without documentation of having had the Tdap booster. Parents or guardians should ask their private health care provider, or the health department, to review their child’s immunization record if they are unsure if their child has received the Tdap booster. A signed and dated immunization record from the physician stating that your child has received this immunization will be required. You may send in your documentation now to your school's registrar, to ensure that he or she meets this requirement before the first day of school in the fall.

Students can receive immunizations required for school at any Fairfax County Health Department immunization clinic. Information about health department clinic locations and hours can be found at http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/hd/hdclinicsite.htm.
