Dear Stenwood Families:

I’m sure most of you have kept up with the news about Fairfax County Public Schools beginning school for the first time prior to Labor Day.  Yes, our first day for students is August 28th!  Did you know that your child’s attendance on the first day of school and the tenth day of school (September 11th) plays a significant role in determining the number of teachers and other instructional staff that can serve Stenwood for the school year?  Our student numbers are reported to the central office on those two days, and decisions are made about whether we get to maintain our current staffing, or whether we might gain or lose staffing.

How can you help?  First, please ensure that your children start school on the first day.  Please plan your summer vacations accordingly.  If you should have an extenuating circumstance that prevents you from having your child in school at the beginning of the year, please be sure to inform Mrs. Wallen, Stenwood’s registrar, as the specifics of your return date.  This can help me build the case for maintaining or increasing our staffing.  Thank you for your support with this situation.

We received our bell schedule for next year, and the only change is a slight adjustment to our morning preschool bell schedule.  Our bell schedule is as follows:

School Hours for 2017-2018:

Grades K-6
 8:30-3:25

Preschool (AM)          Preschool (PM)
 9:05-12:25                   12:30-3:50

We had a wonderful time at the Flip Flop Hop this past Friday.  The weather was superb, and students, staff, and parents enjoyed dining together.  Our DJ played great music, and everyone had a fun time dancing.  Thanks to our PTA for sponsoring this beloved annual event!

I hope you have plans for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend that involve rest, relaxation, and perhaps a trip to the beach.  Our students have been doing a great job taking their SOL assessments; let’s return well-rested from the long weekend to tackle the remaining tests.  Enjoy the long weekend!

Sincerely,
Principal Dammeyer
