January 2017 Newsletter

I hope you and your family had a warm, safe, and restful break! As we return to school and work, I want to keep you posted on our current school board projects. We are  addressing two major pieces of business—the Superintendent Search and the Fiscal Year 2018 (FY2018) budget.

Superintendent Search – Survey and Community Forums

As we enter the search process for a new superintendent, the Fairfax County School Board invites you to share your thoughts and feedback. One of the first steps will be to identify the characteristics we will be seeking in a new superintendent.  You can join the conversation either through an online survey or by attending a series of community forums (listed below).

Spanish interpretation services will be available at all community forums. To request interpretation services in other languages, please call 571-423-1075 at least 24 hours before the event.

Budget

As we enter a difficult budget season, I hope you will stay tuned and active as we discuss possible cuts and changes to our programming. The superintendent’s Budget Task Force has reconvened and is reviewing proposed cuts in light of a projected budget shortfall between $75-134 million.

The budget process runs from January to July; below is the full calendar. More detailed and updated information is available on our website: https://www.fcps.edu/about-fcps/budget/FY2018. If there are items that you feel need to be protected from possible cuts, please feel free to email me at dapalchik@fcps.edu or join me at my January office hours (posted in the column to the left).
