Karen Corbett Sanders' Newsletter

Dear Families,

I want to start by wishing you a very happy Holiday Season! We have so many reasons to be grateful this time of year. I am especially proud of all our students for their hard work, and our dedicated teachers and parents who ensure that our children can have the best education possible. As we approach the Winter Break, below you will find a few quick updates and dates to keep in mind. Again, I want to wish everyone a joyful and blessed Holiday Season and a prosperous 2017!

Inclement Weather and Emergency Closing Plans

Cold and wintry weather is on its way! Due to inclement weather or other emergency situations, it may be necessary to close schools for the entire day, to open schools late, or to close early.

Parents are urged to make arrangements now for the care of their children when schedule changes are made (and to provide for the rare situation when it is necessary to close an individual school because of a power failure or other circumstances). Children should know where to go if a parent will not be home.

FCPS has several schedules set up to deal with inclement weather; these are put into effect when conditions threaten the safety of students and staff members:

  • Keep schools closed.
  • Open two hours late.
  • Close two hours early.

Read more about the Fairfax County Public Schools Weather and Cancellation Procedures.

*In the case of emergency for a weather-related closing, delay, or early dismissal, the FCPS website will automatically include an alert at the top of each page with the appropriate information. This information will remain posted until normal operations have resumed, or you click "Close This Alert" to remove it. There is no Emergency tab as in the past.

Superintendent's Budget Task Force

The School Board and County Board of Supervisors held a joint budget work session on November 22, 2016 to discuss the fiscal estimate for FY2018. Due to the presented findings, the Superintendent's Budget Task Force will reconvene to re-examine last year's recommendations on potential budget savings for the 2017-18 school year. Our goal is to have these recommendations available prior to the January 23, 2017 work session.
