December 2, 2016
Apple Federal Credit Union surprised Mrs. Standiford as the recipient of one of their grants for education last week! This money will go toward our Student Ambassador program. Thank you, Mrs. Standiford!
Message from Ms. Trout
It's hard to believe that December is here already! Thank
you, Terraset families, for your generous donations in support of the annual food
drive organized by the Terraset Ambassadors. We
collected 772 items that have been given to Herndon-Reston FISH, an
organization that helps people in our community. The Terraset Ambassadors worked hard
collecting, organizing, and graphing all the cans and boxes of food. We take great pride in our community and the role we play in making it a better place; thank you for partnering with us to help those in need.
There is a lot going on in the next few weeks as we head into winter break and a new year! Please take a minute to read this month's Terragram so that you can be aware of all of our excitement!
Kindly,
Lindsay Trout, Principal
Fun question to ask your child at the end of the day: "What was the most interesting thing you learned today?"
 Meet Mrs. Garton
I am
very excited to be joining the Terraset Physical Education Department! I have a
true passion for movement, health, and the developing brain. Throughout my 16
year teaching career, I have had the opportunity to teach a diverse group of
K-12 students. During those years I have been able to participate
in continuing education that focused on movement, health, special education,
and technology.
I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education and a Master’s Degree in
Education from Drury University.
When
I’m not working, I enjoy biking, hiking, running, and board games. In
addition, I love to travel with my family. I am enjoying getting to know
the students and sharing fun innovative lessons to provide a strong foundation
in fitness.

Screening for Advanced Academic
Programs Level IV
If your
child is in grades 2 – 6 and you would like to have him/her screened for
full-time AAP level IV services for the 2017-2018 school year, please submit a
signed referral form to Diane Standiford, AART, by January 13, 2017.
A 2nd
grade screening pool is established using the test results from first and
second grade FCPS testing. Students in
the 2nd grade pool are automatically screened for full-time AAP
level IV placement; they are not
automatically placed. Parents or
guardians of students in the 2nd grade pool will be notified in
early January. Students who are not in
the second grade pool will not receive notification.
Do not wait
for the receipt of FCPS test scores to submit a referral for Level IV screening
as the deadline for referrals and parent submissions is January 13, 2017; no referral forms or other materials
will be accepted after that date. Forms
can be found on the AAP website. Please
submit all papers and materials in duplicate to Mrs. Standiford by
January 13. 2017. Her email is dkstandiford@fcps.edu if you have any questions.

 Winter Concert Information
When: Tuesday, December 6th 7:00pm (students arrive at 6:30)
Who: Band, orchestra and chorus students and families
What to wear: Students will wear their orange Terraset Music Department shirts and black bottoms (pants, skirts). Students who recently ordered t-shirts will receive them in early December.
As we prepare for our dress rehearsals in the next few weeks, we would greatly appreciate parental support and encouragement to practice daily. Please ask your student to perform one of the pieces for you every few days. This will increase his/her confidence and comfort performing in front of an audience. Thank you in advance. As with academics, parental support is vital to student success.

Think Tank
We are working in teams to solve problems in Think Tank this month. Using the important skill of collaboration, the 3rd graders in Mrs. Nieto’s class are budding engineers who follow the Engineering Design Process as they work together to design and construct artificial bird beaks for a damaged bird. They are asking questions about birds’ habitats, types and uses of beaks, and what materials will work best to pick up food.
Math students in 4th, 5th , and 6th grade have been working together to apply appropriate strategies to solve complex math problems. They have completed the first round of competition for the Continental Math League or Math Olympiad Contest. Their goal is to improve upon their score and apply one of the strategies we have been using in class on the next contest’s problems.
