November 4, 2016- End of Quarter 1
Terraset Tiger Pride was alive and well in the South Lakes Homecoming Parade!
Message from Ms. Trout
It is hard to believe that we are approaching the end of the first quarter! Thank you for working with your children as they learned new routines, made new friends and got accustomed to new teachers. Teachers spent lots of time during the first quarter building classroom communities and assessing students' strengths and needs. We are now settled into routines and structures and students are learning and growing each day!
Thank you for prioritizing Parent-Teacher Conferences next week. The partnership between parents and teachers is a vital one and being able to dialogue about your child's strengths and needs is a wonderful opportunity for you, as parents as well as for the teachers.
Thanks also to all who attended the Open House on October 22nd. We had almost 500 people come through our doors to see our beautiful school. Finally, the "Sea of Orange" was in full force at the South Lakes Homecoming Parade last week. Thank you for participating and showing your Tiger Pride!
Kindly,
Lindsay Trout, Principal
Fun question to ask your child at the end of the day: "When did you feel most proud of yourself today?"
 Meet Mrs. King
I am very excited to be joining the
sixth grade team at Terraset Elementary School! I have most recently
taught in Prince William County Public Schools as a sixth, seventh, and eighth
grade mathematics and English as a Second Language Teacher. I earned a bachelor's
degree in Elementary Education and master's degree in Special Education from
Arcadia University, as well as additional certifications in Middle School
Mathematics and English as a Second Language.
I am originally from Philadelphia, but
have been living in Reston for about a year and absolutely love it! I hope to
join the wonderful community established at Terraset and use my experiences and
skills to continue improving it for everyone.
When I’m not
working, I enjoy reading, fundraising for spinal cord injury research, and
exploring parks and trails with my husband, Andrew, and my dog, Onyx. I
look forward to meeting you and your child and working together to ensure your
child’s success in sixth grade and beyond.

 Think Tank
According to The Merriam-Webster Dictionary, a 'Think Tank' is defined as a group of people who think of new ideas on a particular subject or who give advice about what should be done.
That is a good description of what goes on in Terraset’s new and growing Think Tank room. In Think Tank students are learning the 21st century skills of collaborating and communicating as well as learning and applying strategies to solve problems while thinking creatively and critically. Teams of 2nd grade students were challenged to build the tallest towers using limited materials. Students in grades 4, 5, and 6 are practicing problem solving strategies as they prepare for the Continental Math League or Math Olympiads competitions. Other students are creating analogies about math and their everyday lives, such as “Adding is like a bus because it helps you get farther in life,” (Sasha) and “B is for Terraset because Terraset is the Best!” (Liam).

 Outdoor Learning Center/Green Hour
Students have begun using our outdoor classroom on the roof. Thanks to our Whole Foods 5% Day, we have purchased 300 native pollinator plants and are in the process of creating a meadow. The Green Team has begun recycling throughout the building. We are excited to be partnering with Home Depot to continue the development of our Outdoor Learning spaces.

 Winter Concert Information
When: Tuesday, December 6th 7:00pm (students arrive at 6:30)
Who: Band, orchestra and chorus students and families
What to wear: Students will wear their orange Terraset Music Department shirts and black bottoms (pants, skirts). Students who recently ordered t-shirts will receive them in early December.
As we prepare for our dress rehearsals in the next few weeks, we would greatly appreciate parental support and encouragement to practice daily. Please ask your student to perform one of the pieces for you every few days. This will increase his/her confidence and comfort performing in front of an audience. Thank you in advance. As with academics, parental support is vital to student success.
