Dear Stenwood Families:
We need your help, please. We currently do not have enough parent volunteers for our annual Thanksgiving Luncheon. Please consider signing up to help for one hour—please make sure it is not during the half hour when you will be eating with your child. Thank you for supporting this wonderful tradition!
Sincerely, Principal Dammeyer
Important Facts About the Meals Tax Referendum
Did you know that a meals tax referendum is on the general
election ballot on November 8? Here are some important facts:
- If
approved, the meals tax is estimated to generate approximately $99 million
in the first year. Seventy percent of the net revenues (approximately $67
million) would be dedicated to Fairfax County Public Schools, and 30
percent would be dedicated to county services, capital improvements, and
property tax relief.
- The FCPS
School Board has committed to dedicating the vast majority of the meals
tax funding to
ensuring competitive teacher salaries.
- The meals
tax is intended to diversify county revenue and to supplement, not supplant,
support for school and county services.
- A number
of neighboring jurisdictions already have a meals tax in place: Alexandria
– 4 percent; Arlington – 4 percent; Falls Church – 4 percent; Fairfax City
– 4 percent; Herndon – 2.5 percent; Vienna – 3 percent; District of
Columbia – 10 percent.
- For the
2017-18 school year (FY 18), FCPS has
required spending increases of approximately $58 million.
Note: Based on state law, the meals tax would not apply in the towns
of Herndon, Vienna, or Clifton.
