Kilmer
Middle School Parent Liaison
In
order to do an effective job of educating our increasingly diverse population
of students, one of Kilmer’s essential responsibilities is to find ways to
reach out to, communicate with, and build relationships with parents and
families of all backgrounds. This school year we have a new part-time parent
liaison, Maria Peal, joining our Kilmer team. Parent Liaisons serve as
communication links among home, school, and the community. Maria Peal is fluent
in Spanish and also works with FCPS interpreters to communicate with families
who speak additional languages. Her contact information is listed below.

Jewish High Holy Days
We
want you to know that Kilmer Middle School understands and will accommodate and
support students who observe Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. To avoid any
confusion and to alleviate undue stress for our students, Kilmer and other FCPS
schools have been in communication with the local Jewish community so that we
all can understand and appreciate what students have to attend to during the
High Holy days. We have sent out a fact sheet to our faculty prepared by the
Temple Rodef Shalom and asked them to help our Jewish students understand that
their priority should be with their families and their faith during Rosh
Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
Please
keep the following in mind as you prepare for the holidays:
- Please
be sure to prearrange absences by calling the attendance line at
703-846-8888 prior to the date of your student's absence.
- Since
teachers will not know who their Jewish students are, students are expected to initiate discussions with their teachers to
arrange a reasonable makeup work plan. Hopefully, by planning ahead,
students will not feel overwhelmed.
- It
is possible that students will miss tests or quizzes on these days. We
have found that declaring a no test/quiz day during the High Holy days is
counterproductive and does not help all students. Instead, teachers are
being asked to go beyond the FCPS policy of 1 excused absence = 1 makeup
day if necessary.
- If
students feel overwhelmed for any reason, they should see their teacher,
counselor, or administrator to help facilitate a plan.
I
hope this helps you all celebrate these most important days without having to
worry about schoolwork.
Community Night: Kilmer Middle School is pleased to announce its 4th Annual Kilmer Community Night, Wednesday, October 5th! This exciting event is open to KMS students, families, and the community. The Kilmer Afterschool Program is hosting an event filled with learning opportunities for both students and parents. The goal is to develop relationships and increase family and community engagement by sharing a number of resources and activities available at Kilmer Middle School and within the Kilmer Community.
We will be one of more than 7,500 sites across the nation sending the message that afterschool is key to children’s success, and that we must keep the lights on and doors open after school during the month of October.
The benefits of quality afterschool programs are clear. They support working families by ensuring that children are safe and productive when the school day ends. Youth are given an opportunity to discover hidden talents as they grow academically and socially. Purposeful afterschool programming make communities stronger by involving students, parents, business leaders and volunteers.
We would like you to be part of our local celebration, scheduled for:
Wednesday, October 5th 2016
4:15pm-6:15pm
Kilmer Middle School
8100 Wolftrap Road, Vienna, Virginia 22182
I look forward to having you join us for Kilmer Community Night. We hope that you will help us keep the lights on after school, and give our children a brighter future.

Lockdown Drills: New requirements from the state of Virginia mandate that lockdown drills must be conducted at least 4 times each school year and two are required in the first 20 days of school. We held our first one earlier this week on Tuesday. Students and staff knew exactly what to do and where to go for this type of emergency. They did a great job.
Reminders

Please support us by selling delicious dough and fun magazines. Students have the opportunity to win prizes by turning in a coupon next Tuesday, September 27, that states how many items they have sold thus far. Weekly
progress reports
Interims
are a thing of the past in FCPS! Beginning on October 17, 2016, Weekly
Progress Reports will be generated through SIS. All parents who have
registered SIS Parent Accounts, and have students enrolled in either middle or
high school will receive these emails. Located in each parent account is
a tab titled My Account. Within this tab parents have the option to choose
which day of the week they wish to receive the progress report emails, opt out
of the service entirely, or designate a threshold for notification. For
example, they can request an email me only when their student’s grade drops
below 75%. Please note that teacher gradebooks opened to parents
and students on September 19th.
Greetings
