Above photo: Welcome to Kilmer - our first day of school!
From the Principal's Desk:
The first
week of school was a grand success.
Take a moment to view some of our photos on the Kilmer website. I enjoyed
seeing so many new faces and visiting with returning students.
Our Kilmer
staff is so thankful for the constant support from our school’s PTA and the new PTA President, Ciaran Lusick. Last
week, the PTA Hospitality Committee coordinated a wonderful staff breakfast one
day and a delicious lunch at the end of the week.
Did you know that Kilmer opened in 1967? Can you believe we are celebrating 50 years of excellence this year? More information to come on how you can help us commemorate this occasion.
We look
forward to seeing and meeting you at our Back-to-School Night on Thursday, September 22nd!
More information in next week's News You Choose.

Please join us in welcoming Ciaran Lusick as our PTA President. Our PTA is very supportive of our students and teachers; they work to supplement our students' experiences by providing field trip transportation, funds for the Geography Bee, Science Olympiad, Odyssey of the Mind, Robotics, and much, much more! Please take a moment to join the PTA (visit their site at https://kilmerpta.org/about-our-pta/ ). You can also follow them on Twitter @kilmerpta.
Our first meeting is next Tuesday, September 13th at 9-10:30 in the Library.
Thomas
Jefferson High School for Science and Technology Information Night – Kilmer
Cafeteria, 6:00 pm
Join
us for our Thomas Jefferson High School Information Night to learn about the
upcoming admissions process for the 2017-2018 school year. An admissions
representative from TJHSST will guide you through the online application
process and provide general information about admissions. Eighth graders and
their families interested in applying to TJHSST are encouraged to attend to
have your admissions questions answered.
StudentVUE
Beginning September
1, 2016, students enrolled in FCPS middle schools will have access to their
student information through their StudentVUE account. There is no registration
process, simply search for StudentVUE from the new FCPS web page found at https://www.fcps.edu/
, and then bookmark the login screen. The login will be the same as the
student’s FCPS network login and password. Upon entry into the application,
students will be able to view their class schedules, teacher gradebooks
(opening 9/19), report cards, demographic and attendance data, as well as,
Health - Emergency alerts and “FCPS Links” to other relevant FCPS websites. https://www.fcps.edu/node/31444
Kilmer students will view a short video clip during PAWS the week of September 19th in order to learn more about how to use their StudentVUE account, download the mobile app, and learn about the importance of using StudentVue to monitor their grades and track their assignments.
ParentVUE
and StudentVUE Mobile Applications: Mobile applications for both ParentVue and StudentVue also rolled out on September 1, 2016. These mobile apps
do not have all the information that the desktop versions do, but they will
provide students and parents with a quick view of their schedules, health
information, grades and more. Directions for accessing are on the new FCPS web
page. https://www.fcps.edu/node/31842
Weekly
progress reports
Interims
are a thing of the past in FCPS! Beginning on October 17, 2016, Weekly
Progress Reports will be generated through SIS. All parents who have
registered SIS Parent Accounts, and have students enrolled in either middle or
high school will receive these emails. Located in each parent account is
a tab titled My Account. Within this tab parents have the option to choose
which day of the week they wish to receive the progress report emails, opt out
of the service entirely, or designate a threshold for notification. For
example, they can request an email me only when their student’s grade drops
below 75%. Please note that teacher gradebooks will open to parents
and students on September 19th.
Kilmer SPIRIT
Kilmer’s first Spirit Day will be Friday, September 16th.
All 7th graders should plan on wearing green and all 8th
graders should wear blue. Students must follow the dress code and hats will
not be permitted.
Should your student want a Kilmer T-shirt, they will be on sale,
during all lunches, Monday (9/12) through Thursday (9/15). We do have
a limited supply of t-shirts and will sell first come, first serve.
Shirts are $10; we accept cash or checks made out to “Kilmer
Middle School”. Sizes are Adult S to XL.
Arrival / Dismissal Procedures
Parents, please review these important rules for arrival and dismissal procedures. The procedures have been explained to students earlier this week. Spend a moment to discuss them with your student. Students who live
along FCPS transportation routes are strongly encouraged to ride the buses.
Morning Arrival:
- Kiss & Ride drop off is located outside doors 14, 15, and 16 at the side of the building each AM. (Kiss & Ride students will enter and exit the building using the doors at entrance 14, 15 and 16).
- In the AM, school bus riders will unload along the front of the school building and enter the building through door 1 (main entrance), only.
- All students must use the sidewalks and crosswalks at all times. Bike riders MUST walk their bikes once they arrive on campus.
-
ONLY school buses will be allowed use of the bus loop in the front of the school during the hours of 7:00-7:30 am.
Afternoon Dismissal:
- Buses will load for departure outside Exits 14 (F-hall), 15 (G-hall), 16 (H-hall) and along the fence near the trailers.
- Students
should immediately exit the building after school and check the white
board located outside of Exit 15 (G-hall) to see if their bus has arrived
and its location.
- If you
check the board and your bus is not listed, students should go to the end
of the bus line where they will wait for their bus to arrive. To ensure
everyone’s safety, DO NOT wait and form crowds along the
sidewalk.
- Students
are not allowed to cut through the parking lot to get to their bus.
- Kiss &
Ride for students being picked up will be located outside of Exit 1
(front of the building). Cars are able to park in a double lined
formation.
- Walkers
and bike riders will leave via Exit 1 (front of the building).
Please use sidewalks and crosswalks at all times.
Greetings
from Afterschool!
As we get
settled into the new school year, we invite all students to take advantage of
Kilmer’s Afterschool Program. The first day of the Afterschool Program and Late
Bus transportation is Tuesday, October 11th. Below is a sample of what afterschool programs will look like.
Offerings
are subject to change based on teacher availability, student interest and
funding. There are two blocks after school, 2:25-3:30pm (blue) and 3:45-4:45pm
(green). Students do not have to stay for the second block and may walk
or be picked up at 3:30pm. Students may not leave and return for second block
activities; they must stay through the first block.
Please
check the Afterschool Activities calendar http://www.fcps.edu/KilmerMS/activities/afterschool.html
frequently for up to date information. You may register your student for the
Afterschool Program online (must be logged into the student’s FCPS Google
account) and forms are also available in the Main Office and Cafeteria. There are no Afterschool activities on early
release days and Fridays when the following Monday is a holiday. Contact
Afterschool Program Specialist, Kimberly
Kardelis at kckardelis@fcps.edu should
you wish to volunteer or have questions.
