6thgradeceremony

Congratulations to the Sixth Grade Class of 2016! Our oldest Lane Lions were officially promoted to seventh grade this afternoon at a special ceremony. Awards were also handed out to selected students, and many students were recognized for their hard work in a variety of school activities.

Good afternoon, Lane parents & guardians!

Welcome to our final Weekly Roar of the school year! It’s hard to believe that tomorrow is the last day. It seems like just yesterday we were getting ready for the first day! It has been such a privilege to work with your children this year, to watch them learn and grow and be so successful in ways both big and small each day.

Congratulations to all of our sixth grade Lane Lions, who officially became seventh graders this afternoon in a special promotion ceremony. We will miss them next year, and we wish them great success in all their future educational adventures. They will always be a part of the Lane Lion Pride!

We’d also like to wish a fond farewell to those families who will be leaving the Lane area as this school year ends. We’ve enjoyed getting to know you and your children, and wish you well wherever life may take you.

Those families who are returning to Lane next year should note that we’re already hard at work planning for the fall. Be sure to check the school website periodically over the summer to stay up-to-date on back-to-school events such as Open House and Back to School Night.

Finally, please remember that we will dismiss two hours early tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. Please make sure you have this important schedule change on your calendar.

Have a wonderful, relaxing summer, and we’ll see you in September!

Summer Office Hours

If you have school business to take care of during the summer months – Monday, June 27, through Friday, August 26 – please note that our office will be open limited hours during that time. We will be open for general business from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday (except for Monday, July 4, which is a holiday). Visits during other times will be offered by appointment only.

New School Hours Coming in September

Our school hours will be changing slightly next year, moving up 5 minutes to a 9:20 a.m. start. Dismissal will also move forward 5 minutes to 4:05 p.m. each day. Please make a note of this change and factor it into your arrival and dismissal plans for next year as you make them in the coming months.

“Book Your Summer” with Fun Reading Adventures!

Studies continue to show that students risk losing reading skills gained during the school year over the summer months. A new program developed by FCPS called “Book Your Summer” hopes to alleviate some of that loss by encouraging students to continue their reading adventures while they’re off from school. When students choose books they want to read and families engage with them about what they are reading, significant summer reading gains can occur!

“Book Your Summer” works like a Bingo game. Rising first through twelfth graders are encouraged to choose books and spend the summer reading using the READ! activity card as a guide. It’s easy to play. Just choose a path on the READ! card, complete the activities, and record the titles of the books read. Once the path is complete, submit your “win” online.  Participants in each school will qualify for a chance to win school prizes of $50 in books of their choice or even a laptop!

The FCPS program will run from Monday, June 27, to Wednesday, September 6. You can find READ! cards, book suggestions, and other details on the FCPS website at http://www.fcps.edu/is/book/.
