Principal's Weekly Message

Dear Stone Parents and Guardians,

This week we asked our students to wear pink for our Bully Prevention and Intervention focus.  We encouraged our students to be kind to one another and to Stand Up and Speak Out against bullying.  We want every student to feel safe at Stone and we take this responsibility seriously.  Thank you for encouraging your students to report incidents they encounter or experience at school and in the community. Our goal is to provide a safe environment for all of our students to grow and learn.

I would like to personally, thank everyone who participated in Stone’s 25th Anniversary Celebration on Thursday. It was wonderful seeing so many returning staff members and students.  We were honored by the presence of Stone’s first principal, Mrs. Susan deCorpo. Our orchestra and chorus students were amazing and Stone’s very own rock band, The VaDeatles were amazing as well. We ended the night with a reception sponsored by our PTSA.  Thank you for your continued support.

Students will bring home their report cards today so please be sure to ask your student for it, as it may slip their mind!   Also, if the report card mysteriously disappears between school and home, please contact the school and we will be happy to send another copy home with your student.

Next week, May 2nd through May 6th is Teacher Appreciation Week. I hope you will help us appreciate your student’s teachers by writing and sending them a note of appreciation.  Thank you for partnering with us and for all you do for the Stone Community!

Amielia Mitchell, Principal

PTSA FUNDRAISER at Glory Days – April 28  – May 2

Glory Days has graciously allowed the Stone PTSA to host a fundraiser April 28 through May 2. To participate in the fundraiser, guests need to ask for an itemized guest check and send it to Stone. Glory Days will donate a percentage of all receipts collected to Stone.  So please stop by any Glory Days and support this fundraiser.

TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK – MAY 2 – 6

The first week of May 2-6 is Teacher Appreciation Week.  May 3rd is Teacher Appreciation Day and we invite you to think about your student’s teachers and how to show them your appreciation and recognition for the work they do with your student every day.  Please encourage your student to write a special note to their teachers letting them know how much they appreciate them.

INTERNATIONAL WEEK – MAY 2 - 6

Stone’s PTSA and the school multicultural committee are planning an International Week for the week of May 2nd.  There will be daily themes and International trivia.

• Monday, May 2 – “Are you International?”
• Tuesday, May 3 – “Proud to Be An American” (Wear red, white and blue)
• Wednesday, May 4 – “We are the World” (Wear traditional dress from countries around the world)
• Thursday, May 5 – “International Games Day” (Wear your favorite soccer or team jersey)
• Friday, May 6  - “World Traveler Day” (Dress like a tourist)

DRESS CODE

As the weather continues to get warmer, please remind your students to dress appropriately for school. A few tips to remember include (but are not limited to):
• Shorts, skirts, and dresses must be longer than fingertips when arms are extended at side
• Tops must have straps or sleeves (no tank tops or halter tops)
• Pants and shorts should not sag or undergarments show
Words and symbols on the clothing should be appropriate. Students who are in violation of the dress code will be asked to change, and the parent/guardian may be called to bring alternate clothing if necessary. We appreciate your support in this area as we strive to maintain consistency between home and school.

May 11, 2016 - National School Nurse Day

National School Nurse Day (School Nurses: Caring for Others, Caring for Ourselves) is May 11, 2016. Fairfax County Public Schools appreciate the role of the public health nurse (PHN) and the school health aide (SHA), as they contribute every day to the health and welfare of all of our students.  Our PHNs take on multiple roles each and every day.  For many of our students, the PHNs are the only health professionals that our students may have access to on a regular basis.   Resources for celebrating National Nurse Day may be found at: National School Nurse Association, https://www.nasn.org/AboutNASN/NationalSchoolNurseDay.

REGISTER FOR YOUR SIS PARENT ACCOUNT

Parents were granted access to their children’s grades via the Student Information System (SIS) Parent Account in September.  The Parent Account provides access to a wealth of student information, including attendance, report cards, class schedules, grades, course history, and discipline and school information.  Students will no longer receive paper copies of their progress reports after the next grading period.  Please sign up for your Parent Account to access your student’s grades.   If you do not have one, please contact Amy Guinta at Stone and she will help you with your Parent Account.  Currently only 70% of our parents have opened their accounts.

SOL TESTING – MAY 23 – JUNE 10

The SOLs are standardized tests required by the State of Virginia and provide a snapshot of what your student understands. While your student may get nervous about this upcoming test, he/she should be reassured that we have been preparing them by learning the curriculum and applying it in practice to do our best all year long.
