April 20, 2016

Highlights:

  • Principal's Coffee - Thursday, April 21, 9:30 a.m.
  • Students released 2 hours early at 2:05 p.m. Thursday, April 21; Teacher Workday Friday, April 22

Good afternoon, Laurel Hill Parents & Guardians!

It has been an amazing week at Laurel Hill so far! First and foremost, we would like to say a huge THANK YOU to all of the parents, staff members, community members, and other Laurel Hill friends who attended our PTA’s “Prom” last Friday and/or bid on the wonderful items they had up for auction. At the PTA meeting tonight, we will hear the preliminary proceeds report to find out how much was raised to support our Technology Initiative. We know it’s going to be great!

And speaking of that PTA meeting, we hope we’ll have a great turnout for another reason as well – it’s time to find new members of the PTA Board for the coming school year. Please consider getting involved with this terrific organization that does so much for our school. At the meeting tonight at 7 p.m. in the Library, you’ll be able to learn more about the positions available and how you can help.

The coming school year was also front and center last night as we welcomed our incoming Kindergarten families during our annual Kindergarten Orientation & Registration Night. It’s always fun to see the little lions who will soon be part of our pride!

Finally, here are a few reminders for the remainder of this week:

    • Tomorrow morning, Thursday, April 21, we will host our monthly Principal’s Coffee at 9:30 a.m. in the Cafeteria. ALL parents are invited to attend and bring their questions and concerns to the table for discussion.

    • Tomorrow afternoon we will dismiss two hours early for end-of-the-quarter teacher work time. Students will be released at 2:05 p.m.

    • Friday - April 22 - is a Teacher Workday and students do not report. SACC and the office will be open regular hours

    Have a great week!

~ Mrs. Dalton, Dr. Duling, and Mrs. Smith

    School News & Notes

Advanced Academic School-Based Programs Spring Screening Information
         - Differentiation in Areas of Academic Strength, Grades K-6 (Level II)
         - Part-Time Advanced Academic Program, Grades 3-6 (Level III)

Students in kindergarten through fifth grade are screened for AAP Level II or III services each year by a local screening committee.  Parents or guardians may choose to submit a Level II-III Referral form for their student.  However, a referral form is not required for students to be screened for Level II-III services.  If parents choose to complete the optional referral form, it must be submitted to Jeane Fahrenthold, Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, by TOMORROW - Thursday, April 21, 2016.  Parents or guardians who submit a referral will be notified of their student’s eligibility status by May 27, 2016.

The Level II-III Referral form, as well as additional information about AAP Levels of Service, can be found on the AAP website at http://www.fcps.edu/is/aap.  Paper copies of the referral form are also available in the Laurel Hill office.

If parents or guardians wish to appeal an ineligible decision, they may submit an appeal with new data for consideration by the local school screening committee.  This new information would be submitted to Mrs. Fahrenthold.

If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Fahrenthold at Jeane.Fahrenthold@fcps.edu.

Updated information about the entire Advanced Academics Program Continuum of Services can be found in the department’s spring newsletter posted on our school website.

    PTA Reminders

A Message from Outgoing PTA President Cari Nielsen:

First, on behalf of the entire executive board of the 2015-2016 PTA, I'd like to say "THANK YOU!" Thanks to our PTA members, volunteers, and families for what has been a great year so far. We've had some great events (Movie Night, International Night) and just held our 2nd Annual LHES PTA Gala, which raised funds to support enhancing technology in our classrooms. Stay tuned for more information on how much was raised and what we plan on doing with the money! Please join us for our final PTA meetings of the year to be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, 4/20/16 (tonight!), 5/18/16 (Elections), and 6/15/16 (Officer Installation) in the LHES Library.

As you know, the PTA board is made up entirely of volunteers. Consisting of a President, Vice President of Programs, Vice President of Fundraising, Secretary, and Treasurer, the board plans all the activities for the PTA, appoints chairpersons to various boards (membership, volunteers, before/after school programs, etc.). Each board member serves for a one-year period and cannot remain in the same position for more than two years. As I have served for two years, these are my last few months as PTA President. Without a board, there cannot be a PTA - and without a PTA, our students will miss out on many opportunities, to include:

    • programs such as International Night, Movie Night, Chess Club, Girls on the Run, Engineering for Kids, Assemblies (such as the awesome Mobile Planetarium)
    • funding for expanding the playground, enhancing technology, teacher appreciation, field trip transportation, new spirit wear, 6th grade events, pizza parties for SCA and Patrols, teacher stipends each year, yearly teacher's college.

Now is the time for you to show your children a great example of leadership in action and volunteer for a 2016-2017 Board position! The PTA Board meets over the summer to formulate plans for the upcoming school year. Ideally, board members will be elected in May and will begin serving their terms in June. All PTA members are encouraged to nominate themselves or someone else for a PTA Board position. All board positions are open, and without at least a President, Treasurer, and one other board member, planning cannot begin for the 2016-2017 school year. To be eligible for a 2016-2017 board position, you must be a current PTA member (teachers that are PTA members are welcomed on the board!), willing to serve for the entire 2016-2017 school year, and able to give of your time to volunteer.  Our board members are working and stay-at-home mothers, fathers, and teachers from all backgrounds.

We hope to see you tonight at 7 p.m. in the Library!
