Dear Families,

MyON is currently hosting a reading contest called What a World! Take Flight with myON this Spring! The top school, based on the most time spent reading during the contest period of March 14 – April 1, will be awarded a $500 check!

Research shows that when students have the ability to choose books at their level and within their interests, they are more engaged in reading. Time off from school is the perfect opportunity for your child to show you what books he/she has been reading on myON—and it’s the perfect time to read more of these books together!  Quality time with your kids ... nothing better than that!

FCPS and BRES Expectations for myON:

The myON online library is approved by FCPS, and is available for all students.

Like any public library, myON has thousands of books available to students, offering them freedom of choice.  That said, in school, teachers have created/assigned 'projects' (book/genre selections at your child’s reading level and activities) that the students can access and choose from, which can be monitored by the teacher.  We guide students to be reading books at their reading (lexile) level, including various genre selections, especially within book sets. Students should be reading books that are within 100 lexiles of their reading level.  If you are unsure about your child's reading level, please feel free to ask his/her teacher.

At home, as with any website, students should be monitored by a parent/guardian when accessing the myON online resource. In doing so, you can ensure that your child is reading books that are appropriate for his/her age and reading level.

Please encourage your child(ren) to keep up with their reading skills and practices during spring break, whether it’s with eBooks or a good, old-fashioned hard copy.

Upper grade students (gr. 3-6) should be logging in their books as they finish reading to count toward our Schoolwide Reading goal.  They can access the form with this link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1-w2Dtp25NqCZcSVi2Q2TJMFJjvv-nEWgt744IZ_UlMg/viewform .

Happy reading!

Patti Brown, Principal
