Virginia Breeze Hits the Road in Showcase Tour
~ Residents Encouraged to Come and Learn about the Commonwealth’s Intercity Bus Service Along I-81 and I-66 ~
RICHMOND, Va. — Traveling to and from Washington, D.C., along I-81 and I-66, used to be a hassle for residents and students in the Shenandoah and New River Valley. Now, Virginia’s first state-supported bus service makes the trip a breeze. The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) cordially invites all residents to attend one of six events on Oct. 24th and 25th, as the Virginia Breeze visits several stops along its route. Each event will feature giveaways, provide information about the service, and let visitors hop aboard to experience the bus’s modern features.
Launched in December 2017, the Virginia Breeze provides a reliable and affordable travel option that connects urban and rural Virginians alike to the places they want to go, with eight daily stops on north and south bound routes between Blacksburg and Union Station in Washington. Approaching its first full-year of service, the Virginia Breeze has topped all expectations, serving 14,501 customers, more than doubling initial ridership projections.
“The Commonwealth is proud to offer this economical, reliable, and successful service to travelers connecting along the I-81 and I-66 corridors. By providing travelers with real options, we continue our commitment to reducing single-occupancy vehicles and congestion on our roads,” said DRPT Director Jennifer Mitchell.
The service provides a critical link between rural Virginia and D.C., making it easier for residents to visit the city for a weekend or make connections to other destinations at Union Station or Dulles International Airport. The Virginia Breeze bus is the only public service that stops at Dulles Airport. The daily route includes stops at several universities along the way, making travel accessible for students and their families, as well.
