Nominations for the 2026 Standards of Learning Item Review Committees – Due April 3 The Virginia Department of Education Office of Student Assessment is seeking nominations for the 2026 Standards of Learning Item Review Committees for mathematics, reading, science, and history and social science. Approximately 10-15 members are needed for each of the committees, and school divisions may nominate one or more representatives for each committee. The Committees will be convened July 2026 in Richmond. For a full list of committees and specific dates, please refer to the 2026 SOL Item Review Committee Information for Applicants and the Assessment Committees web page. The three-step application process must be completed by April 3.

New ITRT Toolbox Canvas Course Launch The Office of Innovation has launched the Virginia ITRT Toolbox Canvas Course, an interactive self-paced, six module learning experience for current and aspiring ITRTs and for leaders who supervise them. Virginia Association of Science Teachers Professional Development Institute Early bird registration is now open for the VAST Professional Development Institute, to be held November 12–14 in Harrisonburg. This year’s theme, “The Next Generation of Science: Innovate, Elevate, and Accelerate,” will bring together educators from across Virginia for a preconference and sessions focused on innovative strategies and professional growth in science education. Virtual Entrepreneurship Lean Pitch Challenge High school teachers are invited to nominate a student or team of students to participate in the Virginia Council on Economic Education’s (VCEE) second virtual Entrepreneurship Lean Pitch Challenge. The VCEE statewide competition awards real seed money to assist student-entrepreneurs in starting a business. Coding for Good Workshop This summer, Forward Education is partnering with CodeJoy and Infosys Foundation USA to offer a free virtual PD course featuring a new Coding for Good Kit for micro:bit. In this hands-on, educators will explore real-world coding and AI projects that help students build solutions around health, safety, accessibility, and conservation. Reading Specialist Program William & Mary offers a M.A.Ed program and a post-professional online certificate for teachers who would like to add a reading specialist endorsement. Both programs are fully online, offered in 7-week terms during fall and spring semesters, and 5-week terms over summers. The deadline to apply for the next cohort is May 31. Online Reading Specialist Program Virginia Tech’s Reading Specialist program offers an MEd for teachers leading to the Reading Specialist VA Endorsement. This 18-month, fully virtual program includes dedicated course series in literacy coaching, adolescent literacy, literacy foundations, and assessment. Online Teaching Guides for Literature Teaching Literature for Liberty is a community partnership between the Center for the Liberal Arts at the University of Virginia and K–12 educators. This partnership creates and freely disseminates online teaching guides for literature across grades (kindergarten through high school), and would like to hear educator input on what texts you'd like to teach. Fill out our Teaching Literature for Liberty Teaching Guide Survey. Five randomly selected educators will each receive an e-gift card to Barnes & Noble for their feedback.

Region 2: Virginia Academy for Paraprofessional Excellence (VAPESE) in Special Education This three-day, in-person VAPESE academy will be held July 7–9, at Norfolk State University and is designed for Region 2 paraprofessionals who support students with disabilities. The Academy will focus on specially designed instruction. Participants will be selected through a competitive application process and are expected to attend all three days of the academy.
