Emergency Preparedness Reminders
With extreme heat warnings in effect for many localities throughout the Commonwealth, the VDOE wants to remind child care providers that extreme heat can have an impact on utilities such as electricity and water. Providers are encouraged to make sure that their emergency preparedness plans are up to date particularly related to loss of utilities, closings, delayed openings, and relocations. Make sure parents are fully aware of the facility’s relocation plan and channels of communication in the event of a relocation or closing.

With summer in full swing, VDOE is reminding caregivers of the importance of safe water play. Caregivers are reminded to ensure constant supervision of children in or near water, establish clear safety rules for children at play, and ensure a safe water play environment including lakes, pools, wading pools, beaches, splash pads, and sprinklers. Parent permission should be obtained prior to engaging in water play. A low ratio of children to staff during water play is encouraged.
