National Fingerprint Based Background Check Fees
|
This memo is to notify child day programs and family day systems that the state will no longer cover the costs of background checks due to budget limitations. As you may know, there are more than 12,000 children on waitlists for Virginia’s Child Care Subsidy Program and all resources are being maximized to address this unmet need. For programs subject to national fingerprint background checks pursuant to § 22.1-289.035 et seq. of the Code of Virginia, the Department of Education will be unable to continue to cover the cost of national fingerprint background checks beyond December 31, 2025. Effective January 1, 2026, child day programs and family day systems will be responsible for covering the cost of obtaining fingerprint based background checks.
Child day programs and family day systems are encouraged to plan for this change. When preparing for operating costs beyond December 2025, please refer to the fingerprint fees below.

Child day programs and family day systems required to obtain national fingerprint background checks pursuant to §22.1-289.035 et sec. will continue to use Fieldprint to obtain fingerprinting and will continue to receive letters of eligibility from the Virginia Department of Social Services-Offices of Background Investigations.
As we approach January 2026, additional information will be distributed to ensure a smooth transition for child day programs and family day systems. In the meantime, information related to background check requirements including instructions for completing background checks can be found on the background checks webpage on the Department’s Child Care VA website.
