June is National Children's Awareness Month
Join VDOE in recognizing National Children's Awareness month. Children's Awareness Month highlights the importance of children's overall well-being by raising awareness about children's challenges and promotes their health, safety and education. This national event in June is an opportunity to empower individuals, organizations, and communities to advocate for the rights and well-being of children. Child care providers can celebrate Children's Awareness Month by engaging in activities that promote fun, learning and community involvement.
National Child Safety Week: June 5-11
The VDOE is encouraging caregivers and educators to recognize National Child Safety Week. This annual event is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of keeping children safe and healthy. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, unintentional injuries are the leading cause of child fatalities in the U.S., including motor vehicle accidents, drowning, poisoning, suffocation, and fire/burn-related injuries. Programs are encouraged to complete a facility safety assessment to identify indoor and outdoor hazards and take action to ensure the safety of children.

Updated: Indicator 7: Child Outcomes Summary Process Technical Assistance Document
The United States Department of Education requires states to report data on the percent of preschoolers with Individualized Education Programs who demonstrate improved child outcomes. The VDOE recently updated the Indicator 7: Child Outcomes Summary Process Technical Assistance Document to assist local school division teams in completing the Child Outcomes Summary (COS) process accurately and with fidelity. Primarily, updates were made to the assessments that align with the child outcomes areas.
Update Contact for Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) Division Leader
The VDOE is updating its contact information for school division leaders responsible for the administrative oversight of ECSE programs. Each school division should have at least one but no more than two staff identified for this role. The purpose of this update is to ensure VDOE can provide communication and technical assistance related to ECSE to the appropriate school division leader. Please identify the primary contact(s) and update the ECSE Administrator Contact List 2025-2026.
