Early Childhood Educators May Apply for Summer 2025 Scholarships through April 28
Child care educators taking Early Childhood Development courses at Virginia’s Community Colleges and accredited Montessori Certification Programs may apply online for Summer 2025 scholarships through April 28. Students need to register for courses prior to submitting a scholarship application to be sure the courses they want are offered during the summer semester. Students may request scholarships for up to two APPROVED COURSES per semester.
Carbon Monoxide Safety Reminder
Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, and poisonous gas. Carbon monoxide poisoning can happen any time of year. Pursuant to § 22.1-289.058 of the Code of Virginia, all licensed child day centers and licensed family day homes, and any religiously exempt child day centers and certified preschool programs that serve preschool-age children are reminded that each building built before 2015 must be equipped with at least one carbon monoxide detector.

VPI Spring Application- Now Open in SSWS – Due on May 15
Save the Date: Introduction to VAConnects for School Based PreK Programs – Webinar on April 22 at 10 a.m.
This webinar will provide school-based early childhood programs with more information about the migration of LinkB5, VALLSS, and VKRP into VAConnects. VAConnects is a modern, secure integrated data system that connects LinkB5, the Virginia Language and Literacy Screening System (VALLSS), and the Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program (VKRP). VAConnects will be the data system in use for the 2025-2026 school year. Registration is required. School Based Pre-K program administrators have received an email with registration link.

Using Assistive Technology (AT) to Support Early Childhood Special Education
It is never too early to consider assistive technology supports and services. The How do I use AT to Support Early Childhood Special Education? resources were curated by the Virginia Department of Education’s Assistive Technology Network. Here, you will find information about implementing Assistive Technology (AT) and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) to support language, play, literacy, and early math skills; information about adapted books; AAC supports; CORE vocabulary resources; and switch accessible toys.

Preventing Childhood Lead Exposure from Water and Paint
Reducing lead exposure, particularly from water and paint, is a priority that federal and state initiatives support. In response, the National Center on Health, Behavioral Health and Safety is offering a virtual webinar to learn more about lead exposure from water and paint. Participants will gain insights on how to identify where lead is located, testing strategies, and best practices for removal.

VQB5 - Virginia's Unified Measurement and Improvement System
VQB5 Improvement Resources
This spring, VQB5 programs should take some time to reflect on their progress during the year to support continuous quality improvement. Using the results from VQB5 CLASS observations along with information about the use of VDOE-approved early childhood curricula, sites can measure their growth from fall to spring. Sites can also reflect on the successes and challenges of the past year and begin to prepare for next year based on their reflections.

The ELDS/CLASS Crosswalks are designed to support providers and stakeholders to deepen their understanding of the connection between the Early Learning and Development Standards and the CLASS tools.
