Emergency Preparedness and More: Free Training for Child Care Providers
Prepare for the unexpected with Child Care Aware of Virginia's Emergency Preparedness class, that covers Virginia’s requirements, helps identify potential threats, and assists in creating an emergency plan for your program. Additional free training includes First Aid & CPR, Health & Safety Guidelines, and Child Care Subsidy Program requirements.
New Resource for Determining Compliance with Provisional Hire Requirements
The VDOE is pleased to announce a new resource for child day programs and family day systems that are required to comply with the background check requirements in § 22.1-289.035 of the Code of Virginia. The Provisional Hire Flow Chart is now available on VDOE’s child care website in the criminal history record check section of the background checks webpage. Check out this resource to help ensure compliance with statutory requirements if your program provisionally hires employees.

March 14 is National Children's Craft Day
Caregivers and educators planning to celebrate National Children's Craft Day on March 14 to help foster children's creativity are reminded to take proper safety precautions. Select craft supplies and materials that are age and stage appropriate for children in care, choose products labeled for children's use, be mindful of products containing common allergens, ensure close monitoring and supervision of children during the activity to prevent ingestion of materials or accidents, and have children wash their hands after completing activities.

SAVE THE DATE: Early Ed Practitioners in the Greater Fredericksburg Region
Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts is offering a free 1-day symposium on "Joyful Early Learning Through the Arts" on Tuesday, April 8 at University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg. Together we will explore the value of the arts in supporting young children's social/emotional learning and language and literacy development. Come engage in meaningful conversations about utilizing the arts in early childhood settings. Register today
Spring Webinar Series
VDOE is hosting a three-part webinar series to prepare school divisions for the 2025-2026 school year. VPI coordinators and VPI enrollment staff are encouraged to attend. Topics are listed below. Registration links have been sent to school division staff.
- March 18 at 9 a.m. – Program Data and the Interconnected System: Review of all VPI and ECSE data sources and how this information interacts with other early childhood and K-12 data systems.
- March 25 at 9 a.m. – Blended Programming: Overview of all publicly funded ECCE programs and how they may work together with VPI programs. Discussions on how program requirements overlap and differ will be included. As well as how funding can be braided to maximize funds.
Early Childhood Special Education
PEATC Early Childhood Academy: April 25 – May 30
The Early Childhood Academy is a free online self-paced course presented by the Parent Educational Advocacy Training Center (PEATC) in collaboration with the VDOE. Families of young children with disabilities will learn about supporting their child’s early learning and development. The course will also share tips and frequently asked questions, including information on making the transition from early intervention to school services easier.
Get to Know Your ECSE Child Count and Placement Data Webinar – April 1
Learn about the December 1, 2024, Child Count and Placement Data for the state and your school-division. Data will be presented as well as a description of how to interpret it. Participants may ask questions related to their data collection, reporting, and analysis. Because VDOE will be sharing state- and division-level data, participants are encouraged to attend the virtual presentation as it will not be recorded. The individual(s) who has primary responsibility for ECSE programs from each division is encouraged to attend; however, learning about child count and placement data will benefit all school-based early childhood program leaders.
