With information on early childhood sites in every city and county in Virginia, this new tool helps families learn about the quality of the sites to help them choose the best option for their birth-to-five children.

Income Limit Updates for Child Care Subsidy Program
As of October 1, 2024, the annual income estimates used to determine families’ eligibility for the Child Care Subsidy Program (CCSP) have been updated. Eligibility information and updated income eligibility amounts can be found on VDOE’s Child Care VA website.
Child Care and Lead Poisoning Prevention Webinar - October 22
Child care providers and early childhood educators are encouraged to join the Virginia Department of Health Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program for a free one-hour webinar to increase lead poisoning prevention awareness in an effort to reduce childhood exposure to lead. This webinar will discuss the dangers of lead poisoning in children, tips for using lead-safe practices in child care settings, resources for getting your home or center tested for lead, lead safe policies for child care settings, and staff talking points and resources for discussing lead safety with parents and caregivers.

Proposed General Procedures for Licensure and Background Checks Webinar – October 22
Join the VDOE’s Office of Child Care Health and Safety for a webinar to learn about the Proposed General Procedures for Licensure and Background Checks regulation (8VAC20-821) currently open for public comment through November 8. This webinar is relevant for owners and administrators representing licensed child day programs, licensed family day systems, subsidy vendors, voluntarily registered homes, religious exempt centers, certified preschools, and system-approved homes. Registration is limited to 1000 registrants, but the webinar will be recorded and posted on the VDOE child care website after the event.

Virginia Preschool Initiative
VPI Local Criteria Eligibility Waiver for 2024-2025: Final Window Open Now – October 15
This is the final of three application windows to submit the VPI Local Criteria Eligibility Waiver, that allows school divisions to request more than 15% of their VPI slots use locally determined eligibility criteria. Each application is reviewed by the Superintendent of Public Instruction and VDOE staff. To complete this process, ensure access to the application in SSWS by contacting your local SSWS manager.
Early Childhood Special Education
Inclusion of Preschool Children with Disabilities in Early Childhood Fall Webinars - October 30 and November 21
The VDOE will provide the following webinars to assist Virginia’s school divisions in identifying, developing, and sustaining inclusive early childhood programs for children with IEPs. The target audience is administrators and supervisors of programs that serve young children with disabilities (ECSE, Head Start, VPI, Title I, community-based providers). Administrators from early childhood programs (Head Start, ECSE, and Virginia Preschool Initiative) are encouraged to view the webinars together.

VQB5 - Virginia's Unified Measurement and Improvement System
New VQB5 Quality Profile Website
The VQB5 Quality Profile Website includes quality information for over 3,100 publicly-funded sites, including child care centers, family day homes, Head Start, and public school preschool, as well as for privately-funded sites that participated in the VQB5 measurement and improvement system last year.
VQB5 Certificates
2023-2024 VQB5 Quality Rating Certificates are now available via LinkB5 reports. It is optional for sites to post their certificates; sites are encouraged but not required to post.
