The Office of Child Care Health and Safety hosted a listening session on September 18 in the Western/Piedmont region. Early childhood professionals joined in conversation and shared their feedback on the Virginia Preservice Training for Child Care Staff. If you were unable to attend and would like to provide feedback on this training, please complete this survey. Details of the next listening session will be shared in the coming weeks.
Greensville/Emporia Child Care Session – Information on Expanding or Starting a Child Care Business on September 28
Are you interested in expanding or starting your own child care business in Greensville county? Thrive Birth to Five is hosting a child care business information session. Free consultation with experienced consultants from VDOE, Child Care Aware of Virginia, and Atlantic Union Bank of Emporia will be present to assist you with getting started. Please join us on September 28, from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. at the Greensville Volunteer Rescue Squad Building. A light breakfast will be provided. You can register here.
Child Care and Lead Poisoning Prevention Webinar on October 22
Child care providers and early childhood educators are encouraged to join the Virginia Department of Health Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program for a free one-hour webinar to increase lead poisoning prevention awareness in an effort to reduce childhood exposure to lead. This webinar will discuss the dangers of lead poisoning in children, tips for using lead-safe practices in child care settings, resources for getting your home or center tested for lead, lead safe policies in place for child care settings, and staff talking points and resources for discussing lead safety with parents and caregivers.

Public Comment on Proposed Regulation – Open through November 8
The Proposed General Procedures for Licensure and Background Checks regulation (8VAC20-821) was published in the Virginia Register of Regulations (Volume 41, Issue 2) on September 9. Public comment will be open through November 8. Refer to the notice of public comment memo distributed to providers on September 6 for more information.
Potable Water Lead Testing Grant Application Closed Until Further Notice
The potable water lead testing grant program sponsored by the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) has reached capacity for September enrollment. The VDH will begin accepting enrollments again at a later date (to be announced). Child day programs required to comply with the potable water lead testing law, § 22.1-289.057, are reminded that the VDOE will begin determining compliance with this new requirement January 1. Virginia Preschool Initiative
VPI Fall Verification Webinar- October 16
Fall Verification, released via the Single Sign-On Web System (SSWS) in mid-October, will contain all the necessary questions and information needed for reporting the Virginia Preschool Initiative (VPI) for the 2024-2025 school year. In order to support divisions, the VDOE will host a technical webinar to review the VPI Fall Verification Report. Attendance is recommended for VPI Coordinators, or other school division reporting contacts.

VQB5 Registration – 1 Week Left! - Deadline October 1
All publicly-funded programs that serve children ages birth to five are required by state law to participate in VQB5 and must complete registration in the LinkB5 data portal between August 15 - October 1.
