Child Care Centers and Family Day Homes
Virginia Preservice Training Regional Listening Session on September 18
The Office of Child Care Health and Safety (OCCHS) will host a listening session on September 18. Early childhood professionals may participate in discussions with the OCCHS concerning the Virginia Preservice Training for Child Care Staff and the work being done to promote healthy and safe practices. This listening session is most relevant for owners and staff of subsidy approved home-based and center-based programs, and licensed child day centers.
Potable Water Lead Testing Grant Application Re-Opened September 15
Licensed child day programs required to comply with the potable water lead testing law, § 22.1-289.057, are eligible to apply for grant funding to support the costs associated with testing. The grant program sponsored by the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) re-opened on September 15 and will remain open until the program has reached capacity. Visit VDH’s School and Child Care Lead Sampling Projects page to enroll. Email questions to leadtestingprogram@vdh.virginia.gov. Programs are reminded that the VDOE will begin determining compliance with this new requirement January 1.
Child Passenger Safety Week: September 15 to September 21
In honor of Child Passenger Safety Week, the VDOE is reminding educators and caregivers to correctly choose, install, and use car seats, booster seats, and seatbelts when transporting children in vehicles. Virginia laws require that children are in a safety seat through age seven. Contact your local Sheriff’s Office to see if they are offering free child safety seat checks in your community this week. Child passenger safety requirements can be found on the Virginia Department of Health website.

VPI Local Criteria Eligibility Waiver for 2024-2025: Final Window Open Now – October 15
This is the final window to submit the VPI Local Criteria Eligibility Waiver, that allows school divisions to request more than 15% of their VPI slots use locally determined eligibility criteria. Each application is reviewed by the Superintendent of Public Instruction and VDOE staff. To complete this process, ensure access to the application in SSWS by contacting your local SSWS manager.

Tomorrow: Fundamentals of Early Childhood Special Education Administration Webinar Series, Part 2
Fundamentals of Early Childhood Special Education Administration is a three-part series intended for new ECSE administrators, new special education directors, or those who would like a refresh on topics related to ECSE administration. The second part will be presented tomorrow, September 18, at 10:00 am. Topics will include an overview of the Virginia Early Childhood Inclusion Guidelines and an overview of Indicator 6. Registration is still open.

The Office of Head Start (OHS) has released a series of resources in response to the newly issued Final Rule Supporting the Head Start Workforce and Consistent Quality Programming as part of the Nurturing the Promise Campaign. These resources are designed to support grant recipient's adherence to the updated Head Start Program Performance Standards outlined in the final rule and help programs continue delivering high-quality services to children and families.
Playground Safety Tips for Early Childhood Programs
Playgrounds offer a great opportunity for young children to grow and learn. They also can potentially be a place where children can experience injuries in many early childhood programs. Join the upcoming webinar offered by the National Center on Health, Behavioral Health, and Safety to learn more about creating outdoor play areas that minimize safety hazards and maximize play opportunities.

VQB5 - Virginia's Unified Measurement and Improvement System
VQB5 Registration – 2 Weeks Left! - Deadline October 1
All publicly-funded programs that serve children ages birth to five are required by state law to participate in VQB5 and must complete registration in the LinkB5 data portal between August 15 - October 1.
