Health Information Resources for Parents of Rising Kindergartners and Returning Students
The school year will soon be starting, and the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) wants to ensure families have resources to help their children make a successful transition. The VDH website offers helpful back to school checklists and Rising Kindergarten Information for parents of rising kindergartners to remind them of needed physical exams and school-required immunizations. Please get this important information into the hands of parents by sharing the resources above with families that you serve.

Virginia Preschool Initiative
VPI Local Criteria Eligibility Waiver for 2024-2025: Now Open through August 15
This is the second of three application windows to submit the VPI Local Criteria Eligibility Waiver, which allows school divisions to request that more than 15% of their VPI slots use locally determined eligibility criteria. Each application is reviewed by the Superintendent of Public Instruction and VDOE staff. To complete this process, ensure access to the application in SSWS by contacting your local SSWS manager.
VPI New Coordinator Webinar on August 8
The VDOE will host a training for VPI Coordinators new to their position for the 2024-2025 school year. Reporting timelines and other annual requirements will be reviewed. This session will be recorded and sent to all registered participants as well as posted to the VPI website after completion. Registration is required.

Virtual See-the-Sound Visual Phonics Training
The Technical Assistance Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program (TAC-DHH) at VCU's Partnership for People with Disabilities will be hosting a virtual See-the-Sound Visual Phonics event. This five-part course is for professionals who are new to STS-Visual Phonics. The training explores the multi-sensory STS-Visual Phonics system of 50+ handshapes/hand cues that represent the approximately 44 English phonemes and more, plus printed/written symbols that represent these handshapes/hand cues. Register by August 2.
Free Online Courses for Families of Children with Disabilities: Early Childhood Academy
The Parent Educational Advocacy Training Center (PEATC) in collaboration with the VDOE, is offering a free self-paced online course focused on providing information for parents with infants, toddlers, and preschoolers with disabilities. The virtual, self-paced training will take approximately 7 hours to complete and can be accessed any time between August 16 and September 20.

VQB5 - Virginia's Unified Measurement and Improvement System
VQB5 Registration Opens in 1 Week – on August 15!
All publicly-funded programs that serve children ages birth to five are required by state law to participate in VQB5 and must complete registration in the LinkB5 data portal between August 15 - October 1.
Webinar: Introduction to VQB5 for New Program Leaders - August 13
On August 13, the VDOE will be hosting a webinar for site leaders and family day home providers who are new to VQB5. The webinar will provide an overview of the required VQB5 participation activities and will address frequently asked questions to help sites prepare for the upcoming VQB5 year.
