Child Care Centers and Family Day Homes
National Burn Awareness Week is February 4 through February 10
In honor of National Burn Awareness Week, the VDOE is reminding caregivers and educators to check your child care environments to prevent burn injuries from fires, flammable liquids, scalds, electrical sources and other risks in your programs. Find prevention resources, fact sheets and infographics related to this important safety week on the American Burn Association’s website.
Child Care Provider Seasonal Updates Webinar and Regional Listening Session on March 12
Join the Office of Child Care Health and Safety (OCCHS) for a webinar to receive updated information about the vision and goals of the OCCHS as it relates to child day programs and family day systems. Registration is limited to 1000 registrants, but the webinar will be recorded and posted on the VDOE’s child care website. Following the webinar, the OCCHS team will be available to meet with providers for an in-person listening session in Norfolk. Come any time during the session to share your questions and thoughts with leadership of the OCCHS.

Virginia Preschool Initiative
VPI Proposed Budget Updates Webinar - February 14 at 12:00 p.m.
Please join Jenna Conway, VDOE Deputy Superintendent of Early Childhood Care and Education, for a webinar reviewing the Governor's budget proposals and the expected timeline for budget approval. VPI coordinators and other division leadership are encouraged to attend. Registration is required. Registration information was shared via email with VPI contacts. If you did not get the registration information and need to attend please contact Tiffanie Meehling. The session will be recorded and sent to all registered attendees.
Fiscal Year 25 (24/25 School Year) VPI Slot Allocations
As shared in the January 25th Virginia Education Update Newsletter, the VDOE Division of Budget and Finance has released the planning templates and budget information related to the Governor’s amended FY 2024 budget and introduced 2024-2026 biennial budget. This included the initial VPI slot allocations for FY25 (school year 2024-2025). Click to download FY25 VPI Slot Allocations. School divisions must confirm their VPI participation via the VPI Spring Application in SSWS starting in April (more information coming soon). Additional 4-year-old slots, as well as 3-year-old slots, can be requested via this application.

Early childhood educators are invited to join this webinar to explore assistive technology via thematic units. Participants will learn how to develop lessons that include hands-on learning for our youngest and most complex learners across all content areas. To conclude the session, participants will adapt the popular book, Dragons Love Tacos.

Head Start
Coordinated Approaches to Head Start and Early Childhood Special Education
On January 24, the VDOE conducted a webinar highlighting coordinated approaches for Head Start and Early Childhood Special Education. Participants received a high-level overview of the federal inclusion guidelines for children with disabilities in early childhood programs and learned approaches on how to partner effectively to support inclusive practices. Honoring Home in Home-Based Programming Webinar - February 14
As educators, we are shaped by our beliefs and values. Providing direct services to families especially in their homes, we need to honor each family’s unique culture while partnering with them to enhance parent-child interactions. To support home visitors in the field, the National Center on Parent Family and Community Engagement has developed a Home Visitor Series that explores personal perceptions and unconscious biases.

Early Learning Support
Registration is Still Open for the Early Learning and Development Standards (ELDS) Microcredential!
The ELDS Microcredential is open to all publicly-funded early childhood professionals in separate English and Spanish courses. Available at no-cost, this 5-hour, non-credit bearing, online, competency-based micro-credential is an introduction to Virginia’s Early Learning and Developmental Standards. Participants will be emailed course log-in information within 7 days of registering. Learners from previous cohorts may still access their course content.
