HEADLINES

New 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning
The 2023 Mathematics SOL are posted on the VDOE website. The document includes an Appendix, which provides additional information regarding the mathematical process goals for students, instructional technology, computational fluency, algebraic thinking and readiness, data and data analysis, and formal mathematics vocabulary. 

New Resources to Support the 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning
These new resources have been posted on the VDOE webpage.  They include: 1) The 2023 Mathematics SOL - Overview of Revisions documents are now posted on the 2023 Mathematics SOL webpage. These documents are available for each grade level or course in Word and PDF formats and provide a comparison of the 2016 Mathematics SOL to the 2023 Mathematics SOL; and 2) Narrated PowerPoint presentations of the 2023 Overview of Revisions are available for grades K - 8, Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2. These presentations highlight changes and revisions in the 2016 standards that resulted in the approved 2023 Mathematics SOL.

STEM Briefs Added to GoOpenVA
The VDOE Elementary STEM Group in #goopenva provides a platform for sharing lessons and resources to support elementary STEM education, including the newly developed VDOE STEM Briefs!  STEM Briefs are instructional supports that are explicitly aligned to the mathematics, computer science, and science standards and are intended to support teachers in making these disciplines visible to students when engaging in engineering design activities and challenges.  STEM Briefs were created by elementary teachers in Virginia with the support of VDOE.

Earth Science Week October 8-14
Earth Science Week will celebrate the theme "Geoscience Innovating for Earth and People." The coming year's event will emphasize the many ways that innovations in the geosciences are helping communities create healthier and increasingly sustainable lives, while accelerating environmental problem-solving around the world. Classroom activities and other resources are available for students to discover the Earth sciences and engage in responsible stewardship of the Earth.

Free Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation Workshop Series on African and African American History This free professional development series is designed to equip elementary, middle, and high school teachers with resources for the classroom and an enhanced understanding of the significant role Black people have played in the formation of the United States. Sessions support several new and existing Virginia History and Social Science SOLs. These interactive workshops will be held virtually at 7 p.m. on select dates from October through February by the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation and The Mariners’ Museum.

Dyslexia Symposium -October 28
All welcome to the Dyslexia Symposium at VCU School of Business from 8:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. Participants have the option to either attend the in-person event or participate virtually. There is a nominal registration fee and VCU students attend at no charge. Find out more information today!

Educators can participate in training sessions each week via Canvas's Training Services Portal. To find any of the sessions listed below, first make sure you are logged into your Canvas account for your local school division. Virginia Junior Academy of Science Symposium
This is a virtual juried science symposium that includes authentic research experience for secondary school students in grades 7-12. Students who participate in the juried 2024 Annual Research Symposium may use the experience to meet one of the criteria needed to earn the VDOE STEM Seal or Seal for Excellence in Science and the Environment.  VJAS is looking to recruit mentors and secondary school teachers who want their students to participate in a virtual long-term research project. Secondary science teachers interested in having a mentor work with their class need to register their schools by the January 15 deadline.

VCEE Bronze Level Virginia Personal Finance Teacher Fellowship Program
Applications are now open for the Virginia Council on Economic Education Bronze Level Virginia Personal Finance Teacher Fellowship Program! This cohort of highly-qualified Personal Finance Teacher Fellows will offer personal finance professional development and resources to other teachers in their school, school division, and region. Applications are due by October 15.

Young Writers Competition
Longwood University is holding a young writers competition for high school students in Virginia. The 2023-2024 contest theme is Taking Action. Students in the 9th-12th grades are invited to enter by submitting to one of the following categories: poetry, fiction, or nonfiction. Submissions will be accepted from February 1 to March 1, 2024. VDOE STEM and Data
The VDOE Office of STEM, the Office of Educational Technology & Classroom Innovation, and the EdTech Evidence Exchange, a project of the non-profit InnovateEDU, have a formal partnership to gather data from VA educators about their experiences using technology with their mathematics students.  Ask your technology or mathematics division director about getting involved so you can access data to inform your mathematics instruction. 

Bring the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts into your Classroom!
Join the VMFA for free videoconferences in the galleries with a museum educator, who will invite students in grades 3-12, to make personal connections with objects and expand their understanding of topics being explored in the classroom. Sessions are approximately 50 minutes and designed to help students hone creative, critical, and reflective thinking skills as they engage with and interpret works of art. Most sessions can be customized to include art from any one of the VMFA's collections. To learn more or request a session, visit VMFA.

NASA Opportunities for High School Students
Virginia Space Coast Scholars: High school sophomores focus on the science, engineering, and technology integral to current missions at NASA Wallops Flight Facility and the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport. Applications due by October 24.
Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars: High school junior and senior students selected to participate in the program are immersed in NASA-related research through interaction with scientists, engineers and technologists. Application due by October 24.
Virginia Earth System Science Scholars: High school juniors and seniors in the program will engage in NASA’s satellite missions designed to improve understanding of our own planet’s complex systems through the power of remote sensing. Application due by October 24.

VAST 2023 Donna Sterling Institute-November 16
The Virginia Association of Science Teachers is offering the institute for K-12 science teachers to be held at the Hotel Roanoke. Participants will learn how to implement engineering PBLs in the classroom, engage in activities to support understanding of engineering and transportation science and apply key components of an e-PBL unit to meet the needs of students aligned to the 2018 Science SOL.  Space is limited. 2023 Career and Technical Education Career Success Stars
VDOE is pleased to announce the 2023 CTE Career Success Stars. Former CTE students representing each of the 17 career clusters as well as a U.S. military branch, are being recognized as the Commonwealth’s brightest Career Success Stars. Their video profiles highlight how CTE programs provide academic and technical skills for high-skill, high-wage, or in-demand careers.

How to Become a Teacher
The University of Virginia School of Education and Human Development welcomes you to join us for a virtual information session focused on our teacher education degree programs and alternative pathways to becoming a teacher. A reduced tuition rate is available for VA residents and educators. Register to attend the virtual information session on October 17 at 7p.m.

Educational Leadership Program Information Sessions
Virginia Tech’s Educational Leadership (M.A. Ed./Ed.S./Ed.D/Ph.D.) programs are designed to fit the needs of working professionals with fully on-line and hybrid courses that balances modern academic theory with a focus on practical application. Virginia educators may be eligible for a 25% tuition discount.  Join our information sessions (in-person or online). Certificate Program and Master’s Degrees Opportunities
A virtual info session will be hosted on Wednesday, October 18, between 5-6 pm by George Mason University’s Teaching Culturally and Linguistically Diverse and Exceptional Learners program faculty for all PK-12 teacher candidates and in-service educators. Faculty will be on hand to present an overview of the Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction and Certificate programs in ESOL and World Languages concentrations at Mason. Participants will learn about program structures, outcomes, and admissions requirements, and can ask questions. Application fee will be waived for those who attend this session, and this is a limited special offer for this information session.

Prospective Student Day
William and Mary School of Education is hosting a Day for Prospective Students on October 20 from 3-6 p.m. Learn more about our programs we have designed for working professionals (Master’s, Certificate, and Doctoral Programs). Register  or email with questions.

Administration and Supervision Program
The Administration and Supervision program at the University of Virginia is currently accepting applications for two programs. First is for those wishing to pursue an M.Ed. in Administration and Supervision for Spring and Summer, 2024. The virtual information session is October 19 at 6 p.m. or contact Dr. Jaime Stacy with questions.
 Second, UVA is offering an Ed.D. in Administration and Supervision. This hybrid program holds classes online and alternating in-person in Charlottesville and Northern Virginia once a month. The information session will be held on October 19 at 5 p.m.
