RE: Updated Child Abuse and Neglect: Recognition and Reporting Training and Health
Screening for Child Care Professionals
The Virginia Department of Education is pleased to announce that updated versions of
two important trainings, Child Abuse and Neglect: Recognition and Reporting for Early
Childhood (2 hours) and Health Screening for Child Care Professionals (2 hours), were
released on March 13, 2023. Both trainings are also now available in Spanish. These
trainings continue to be offered for free through our partnership with Community College
Workforce Alliance (CCWA).
Under Virginia law, any teacher or other person employed in a public or private school,
kindergarten, or child day program defined in § 22.1-289.02 of the Code of Virginia is
mandated to report suspected child abuse or neglect. The Child Abuse and Neglect:
Recognition and Reporting for Early Childhood training is a great resource to ensure that
child care staff are adequately trained in recognizing and reporting suspected abuse or
neglect.
The Health Screening for Child Care Professionals training satisfies requirements for the
daily health observation training required by the Standards for Licensed Child Day Centers
(8VAC20-780-245 K) and the Subsidy Program Vendor Requirements for Child Day Centers
(8VAC20-790-600 I).
All child care staff are encouraged to take advantage of these free trainings. More
information about these trainings can be found on the CCWA website or by visiting the
Training and Professional Development Section of the Department’s Child Care VA
website. A flyer announcing the updated trainings is attached to this memo for your
convenience.
