Child Care Centers and Family Day Homes
Visitation by Parents or Guardians in Child Day Programs - Reminder
Child day centers and family day homes are reminded that § 22.1-289.054 of the Code of Virginia requires that a custodial parent or guardian be admitted to any child day program while his child is in the child day program. This requirement applies to all child day programs, including home-based programs and center-based programs, regardless of whether or not the program is licensed. Please review your program policies to ensure compliance with this state law.
Free Emergency Preparedness Training Through Child Care Aware of Virginia
As our thoughts are with the families and friends of the staff and children impacted by the recent tragedy at a nursery in Thailand, we are all reminded how important it is to be prepared for the unexpected. Deadline Extended - Child Care Provider Survey Closing October 28th
To hear from as many providers as possible, we have extended the deadline of the Child Care Provider Survey to Friday, October 28! If you have not already submitted a survey, you have extra time to take it and earn a $25 gift card!
The VDOE is partnering with the Study of Early Education through Partnerships at UVA to learn from site leaders and administrators through this voluntary and confidential survey. Our partners have sent emails with your survey link. If you cannot find it, or if you have questions, email see-partnerships@virginia.edu.

Virginia Preschool Initiative
VPI Fall Verification for School Divisions - Open now through Nov 4, 2022
Fall Verification is now open in the Single Sign-On Web System (SSWS). This report will contain all the necessary questions and information needed to report for Virginia Preschool Initiative (VPI) for the 2022-2023 School Year. In order to support school divisions, the VDOE hosted a technical webinar to review the VPI Fall Verification Report for individuals in school divisions who support this report. For more information, see Superintendent's Memo 239-22.
VPI Local Criteria Eligibility Waiver for 2022-2023: Final Window Closes Oct 15
This is the final of three application windows to submit the VPI Local Criteria Eligibility Waiver, which allows school divisions to request that more than 15% of their VPI slots use locally determined eligibility criteria. Each application is reviewed by the Superintendent of Public Instruction and VDOE staff. To complete, ensure access to the application in SSWS by contacting your local SSWS manager.

Early Childhood Special Education Program Administration – Webinar Recording
On October 5, VDOE hosted a webinar for school division leaders responsible for administrative oversight of local Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) programs. Information related to program improvement in ECSE was shared. The webinar was recorded.
CLASS/Inclusive Classroom Profile (ICP) Pilot Opportunity
As part of VQB5 Practice Year 2, the VDOE will work with T-TACs to pilot the use of the ICP in inclusive classrooms to examine the alignment between the CLASS and ICP. Participating classrooms will receive an observation this fall and follow-up resources or support. Please contact Sandy Wilberger if you are interested in participating. This is a good opportunity to learn about the quality of inclusive practices in your classrooms and provide valuable data for the VDOE.

Head Start
Making the Most of COVID-19 Response Funding Opportunities
Across the nation, Head Start programs have been allocated additional federal funding to support their COVID-19 pandemic response and recovery. As the March 31, 2023 obligation date draws near, the Office of Program Management and Fiscal Operations has created a Management Minute video for grant recipients to review inclusive strategies to spend-down the additional funding. This resource is part of the Management Minute Video Series available on the early childhood learning and knowledge center website.

VQB5 - Virginia's Unified Measurement and Improvement System
Practice Year 1 Results are Now Available!
Practice Year 1 Results are available to site administrators via their LinkB5 accounts. These results are being provided privately for information only to the 1500+ sites that participated last year (2021-2022) to help guide improvement. Sites that participated in Practice Year 1 received an email on October 3 with directions on how to access the results. Sites participating in Practice Year 2 will receive their ratings privately in the fall of 2023.
Understanding VQB5 Practice Ratings
The VQB5 Practice Rating User Guide provides information to help site leaders and other improvement partners understand how practice ratings are determined, using CLASS and curriculum information. In addition to step by step calculator instructions, this guide provides rating examples and answers to frequently asked questions. All sites that recently received a Practice Year 1 rating are encouraged to review.

WIDA Early Years Resources Refresh and Updated State Flyer
Reminder: As of October 1, WIDA has replaced the Promising Practices resource with an updated eLearning course, Exploring WIDA Early Years Essential Actions. The Promising Practices Implementation Kit has also been replaced with the WIDA Early Years Essential Actions Resource Kit.
WIDA Early Years provides free online professional learning courses that focus on supporting young multilingual children in ECE settings. View Virginia’s updated state flyer for specific details related to accessing the WIDA portal.
